    Word came down this morning: the champions of Redcastle failed. All slaughtered. Dragonfood. And Firefang continues to raid the countryside. Lord Crimson is talking appeasement, rounding up a sacrifice of maidens and treasure. And you almost don't blame him -- almost -- for who remains to contest Firefang's scourge? But in your heart, you know the answer -- you. So you set aside your hoe and take up your Grandfather's pitchfork. You won't return without Firefang's head!

    Unfortunately, the first installment of Lord Crimson's tribute is already being collected.
  • appeasement
    A courier announces a new decree from Lord Crimson: Firefang has been declared an Exalted Emissary to the Kingdom, granted immunity for all misdeeds -- past and future, and his security guaranteed throughout the kingdom. It appears you may have to deal with Lord Crimson before you'll have a chance to stop Firefang's atrocities.

    The first appeasement round up has begun. Eleven five-year olds chosen by lottery are to be delivered to Firefang tomorrow. You are distraught and ashamed, but can really do nothing.
  • Bernito
    You hear that Bernito, former captain of Lord Redcastle's private yacht, is being held in a prison in Bumpkinville -- blamed for the loss of the royal yacht. Odd. Bernito is the one true hero remaining in the kingdom. His daring assault of the great kracken is legendary. You can just imagine the scene: one man standing boldly on the prow of a listing yacht, valiantly slicing and jabbing at tentacles with a fish knife in one hand and a kitchen fork in the other. So the ship sank -- the kracken hasn't been seen since, and the people along the shores are safe. Doubly odd -- Bernito was a legendary magician. How could Crimson hold him in a simple prison? All you can figure is that Crimson must've taken his spell book away.

    Reports from Redcastle tell of a peasant's haywagon that spontaneously combusted on a remote road last night, killing all 14 peasants traveling in the caravan.

    Redcastle announces the public execution of the rebel malcontent Loren Silverchain, who was captured yesterday. Festivities begin tomorrow. 8:00 AM: Ceremonial Procession 8:15 AM: Litany of offenses 8:30 AM: Dragon summoning chant begins. 8:30 AM: Children's trash throwing contest begins. 9:30 AM: Dragon skin chafing 10:30 AM: Demonstration of the new Dragon Claw Flail 11:30 AM: The dragon's roar. 12:00 PM: The traitor roast, featuring Firefang, the royal executioner.

    More news has come regarding Silverchain. His offenses were all alleged crimes against the Royal Dignitary, Firefang. Even as you mourn Silverchain's unjust demise, you are enheartened that others are fighting the evil appeasement policy of Lord Crimson.

    More news regarding Silverchain. Apparently, he was seized attempting to retrieve the orb of vulnerability -- the one item capable of overcoming Firefang's magic resistance. The orb is in plain sight in the swamp, not far from Redcastle itself. But so far, neither Lord Crimson nor Firefang have been able to secure it. Something about numerous hydra guardians. You wonder how Silverchain expected to succeed against those guardians, and redouble your training efforts.

    Apparently, Silverchain had been sought by Lord Crimson for about as long as this appeasement policy has been in place, but Silverchain had taken refuge in the midswamp sanctuary where Crimson couldn't touch him. In a valiant effort, Silverchain made a desperate rush toward the inner swamp sanctuary -- closer to his intended target. But he was apprehended near nightfall a few hundred yards shy of the sanctuary -- apparently he just couldn't outrun Crimson through the swamp. You resolve to learn from his error.

    There are numerous reports of undelivered parcels. Rumors are that postal workers, frightened of Firefang, are dumping packages rather than risking the hazardous trip up river past his lair. True, there's a lot of junk mail these days, but some items might be important. If Lord Crimson can't guarantee its delivery, perhaps you ought to. It never hurts to cultivate respect, toting mailbags is good exercise, and should you borrow certain items to slay a dragon, who would complain? As soon as you finish with these sorcerers, you should probably pay a visit to the Postal Woods, just north of Bumpkinville.

    Firefang has expressed disapproval of the kingdom's small number of executions. It is now officially decreed a capital offense not to wear red at all times. First implementation of the new law will be tomorrow morning -- an 8 year old boy was caught skinny-dipping in the river.

    So far, you've found a lot of treasures: heirlooms and parts of relics. But something is conspicuously missing. Why are there no weapons? OK, so Lord Crimson has been confiscating military gear for years. Why should he miss so many shields and no swords? Unless it's not Lord Crimson at all. For years, the Northlands have lured erstwhile explorers. Even now that they have been called tamed, the Northlands are synonymous with high adventure. There, despite the farms, the elements still run strong. And many is the soul that would wish to claim, I've gone beyond the edge of the world! Perhaps all the swords were borne north -- and lost with their bearer. Perhaps your search should continue there.

    Firefang grows more bold in his forays -- he is now seizing sheep from northern farms in broad daylight. Lord Crimson vehemently denies the atrocities, the outrageous lies propagated about a beloved royal guest. As restitution for their duplicity in this slander, Crimson has ordered a special gift of 7 northern maidens for Firefang.

    It is said that angels will rescue one bold enough to seize the orb of vulnerability -- you hope that's true.

You best go over this part of the farm inch by inch. After all, stuff is more likely to pop up in odd places.
