    They say that the five enclaves or heptons, as they call them, want peace and will provide backing for whoever rules the five by the 100th day of the year.

    The Gronchon City State is rich and has hidden power. Anyone who secures that for long enough will find the power of the city swing behind him or her.

    That mad cousin of the Emperor, the priestess.. she's still alive and held in a secure asylum. Break her out and you'd have another candidate for the throne.
  • Emperors
    The two main candidates are in the south of the land, both under house arrest. The Beresfords are liable to seize control of Severus if they are able. He is the strongest candidate.
  • Money
    There is no doubt that if someone could amass a million or so in gold, they would be well on their way to convincing everyone. The power to buy the throne is the easiest course. You might want to enlist some professionals.
  • Missing brother
    It is said that the Emperor had a younger brother whom he incarcerated early in his reign. This man may be the key to the succession crisis

  • The backdrop
    The Nordovician Empire.The last thousand years of history have seen Nordovicia rise to pre-eminence, build and empire and maintain it for over five centuries. It is 1472. The Emperor has died without a direct heir. The nine electors have more than the formality of approving the next Samedes heir to take his place. Only twice before have there been disputes. In each case, civil war resulted, families rose and fell from power but still a Samedes was restored to the throne. There are three Samedes candidates with claims. Will the key houses support one of their claims or will there be an attempt by another great house to seize the throne of emperors ? You are head of one faction, keen to see peace restored so that trade, profit and political stability can be returned to the lands. You have to choose to back one claimant and gain influence for your faction by being the power behind the throne. There are nine electors, six secular, three ecclesiastical. Only twice before, have they not simply approved the direct heir. Once, they stood against the election of Charles the Mad who could not be entrusted with the responsibility. On that occasion, House Witzenburg tried to go further than looking amongst the remaining Samedes, backed by two other houses. The other occasion was to deny a female heir and to put her aside in favour of the next suitable male. On that occasion, House Ulrich led a faction to try to retain Josephine Samedes and, when she was assassinated, attempted to put a Von Ulrich upon the throne. Both failed. Will you now settle on one of the Samedes candidates or will you lead a tird attempt to set a new dynasty on the throne. This is the decision before you. Your faction looks to you to guide them well and to end this inevitableconflict with greater power than when you set out. The candidates from House Samedes are Severus Samedes (The Red Falcon), cousin of the Emperor, a strong administrator, good with money and a competent ruler of Handarus, Frederick Samedes (The Lion), a bold knightly warrior who loves to fight and joust, a popular choice with those who want to resume the war with Surmey and The Carnossian Empire and the third and least known, Lothar Samedes, (The Ghost Hawk), son of an aeging financier duke and heir to the Grand Duchy of Hanneberg. His candidature is supported by those seeking a middle ground. Choices are being made... As you prepare your armies and debate with your war leaders, it will become clearer.
  • The players
    With the pawns in play, you pause to consider the players. There are nine electorial positions but that is incidental. Undoubtably first to move will be the Beresfords. Duke Edmund Beresford of Valcoria has been captain-general of imperial armies in several major campaigns and retains the title Marshall of the Empire. His elder brother, Augustus is none other than High Cardinal of the Temple, perhaps the most powerful political figure after the Emperor himself. Already, rumour says that his guards have seized Riassa and that he has one of the candidates under house arrest while the Beresfords begin negotiations to achieve the best outcome for themselves. Valcoria is an electorate and the High Cardinal is the Arbiter of Change, the man with the casting vote if the electors cannot come to a majority view. Their red and gold colours will soon be seen far and wide. The Witzenberg family lost most of their influence during the abortive attempt to oust the Samedes from the throne. Now without an electorial position, they will seek to at least regain that much. The orange banners will fly in an attempt to pick the winning side even if that means several changes of alliance. The family may be on its own. It is not going to be trusted by other faction leaders. The Witzenburg power resides mainly in Illyna but also Lander. The Von Tacchim family are one that, like the Beresfords, have been close to the throne and never threatened the hierarchy, playing always to retain status quo. Duke Vasely Von Tacchim of Rosgovia holds the Electorial position, there and has Littesburg in his pocket through his cousin Rupert of Littesburg, also a Marshall of the Empire. Littesburg was built up by former Emperors to balance off the threat of the Witzenberg and Ulrich powers. Militarily strong, it commands a central position. Additionally, his faction also boasts the support of Richard Montague, Cardinal of Saxburg. Vas Von Tacchim, as he is known, is a consumate politician, High Ambassador and a man whose ambitions will ensure that he makes careful choices for his faction. The gold eagle on purple is his house insignia. House Ulrich were the other great house to attempt to climb upon the throne and, like the Witzenburgs, they have suffered for it. Nonetheless, a decade of supporting the throne with money and favours has kept them close. They may even dare to attempt to ascend to the crown, again, if they do not gain influence with one of the three candidates, early on. Borussia and Thuringa come under them, the latter being one of the six secular electorates. They are rumoured to have barbarian allies in the north, also. The Le Var - Vas Coburg alliance will be another that will aim to create stability and find a quick end to the conflict. The power of Aquila belongs to Duke Baldwin Le Var who leads the faction. As the major secular elector, he will be looked to early on to indicate a preference. Ably backed by Pellinore Vas Coburg whose cousin Robert is Earl of Convar, he can rely on Convar's military strength, another growing power that the Imperial throne has looked to in recent years. In addition, the Cardinal of Acondium is one of the ecclesiastical electors and happens to be Henry Le Marre, a cousin of the Vas Coburg duke. Thus, with two electorial seats, the faction is politically strong. Another player in this game will be Baron Samedes-Hood, the mysterious Chancellor of the Empire. He holds lands in several places and is extremely rich. From his seat in Montelmar, he can command the support of Duke Archibald Hood in Cytelia who thus controls the final ecclesiastical electorate, that of Anoen whose cardinal, Wulfstan is a weak and easily swayed man. He is liable to hide his ambitions beneath the blue and white of Cytelia The final player in this complex game will be King Frederic of Hallnes, figurehead within the Imperial territories for Surmeyan ambitions. Backed by the Sultan of the desert state, he will undoubtably launch an assault to gain land and power. Hallnes was an electorate until distrust of its connections with Surmey and Carnoss in turn, caused the others to revoke its power, Lander and Raga being created electorates in its stead. Hallnes was a key victory for the Surmeyans with their own religions and culture. Long coveting the Imperial throne, the Surmeyan Alliance will take advantage of the hiatus to strike, sending out the pink and white silks of Hallnes to fly on their behalf. These are the players. You assess your position amongst them and the commentary you have written about yourselves. The game has begun.
  • Time is limited
    The growth of the Surmeyan and Carnossian interests in the south and east threaten the long term stability of the empire. If this matter is not settled within the year, the empire may fall.
  • Views
    You are gathered around the map which is now stretched out across two tables in the star chamber. I would council starting our campaign in the northern states, my lord says the old steward who was once marshal. Why is that ? you ask, looking over the vast domains of the empire. Tactically, once you hold the north, it is easier to sweep southwards and, if we can take Saxonia and Cytelia, we have, at a stroke, gained electorates that will give us far more influence on the political stage. You nod What disadvantages would we face ?
  • Riassa
    The news was of no surprise. Riassa has declared itself neutral. With the major nobles out of the capital, the remaining members of the Imperial Council have been cautious, not wanting to imply support forone side or another. They will obviously wait to see what hand fate deals rather than state their support for anyone. Cowards you mutter, tearing the statement to pieces You'll dance to my tune well enough, in time
  • Hanneberg Landing
    News reaches you that the Grand Duchy of Hanneberg has indeed, intervened. A fleet has been sighted off the west coast and Duke Lothar Von Samedes is believed to have landed with a large army. As a claimant, himself, some think he might seize the throne but your advisors believe he will want to be named as Marshal and stand behind a figurehead that he can manipulate. The idea of the Grand Duchy also controlling the throne does not appeal.
  • Decree
    The Kingdom of Hallnes shall be yours for you and your heirs to hold in perpetuity if you can deliver the throne of the Nordovicians to me. By 100 days, there should be re-enforcements landing in the Alvarg. You need to be holding the main city, there on the 100th and 200th days to receive them.
  • Messengers
    The herald who is brought before you is dusty, dishevelled and favouring a wound that must have been given several days ago. You bid your steward bring him wine and food and order a hot bath to be prepared for him. What news is this that is brought in such haste and peril? You ask The herald bows My lord. Duke Edmund Lotharen, righhtful land holder of Hallstia sent heralds to all the other houses in hope. Hallstia is in rebellion. The false priest, Banod who has put off his Bisops robes and calls himself The Undefined now sits in the fortress castle of my good lord while Duke Edmund languishes in prison awaiting a trial which will not be fair or equitable You nod your head. Lotharen might have been a player. Now he will be beholden to the one who frees him. A soldier of experience, he could be a very useful ally. I must consider this news.   • Gronchon City State
    The city elders of Gronchon have made it known (reads the decree) that they have no intention of giving up the independent status granted by the imperial throne and re-affirmed by each ruler, since. Any attempt to subjugate the city to the will of pretenders and opportunists will be met with extreme force. The city elders will support only those who guarantee the future status of this city state.
  • Key Passes
    There are only three viable passes to reach the southern empire from the north and vice versa. They are in Thuringa, the Hallstian-Rosgovian border and south of Convar on the Aquilean border.
  • Beresford Monies
    My lords (you turn from the warlike group with whom you were discussing tactics to face the courtier who approaches. He smells of posies and cheap oils. Your lip starts to curl.   • Hood Influence
    My lord! You turn to see the castellan hurry across. He looks pleased for once. Ser Galvin ? My lord. Good news. The Bartholomeus Hood wagons and guards have arrived. Valderic's choice to marry into the mercantile and banking arm of the family has indeed proven an advantage.
  • Ulrich Resources
    You watch with satisfaction as the black orks whip the slaves through the gates, hauling wagons one after another, laden with ore and other stuff mined from your estates. This will boost the war effort, considerably. You turn to your Quartermaster Major, Rogdan. Get it all in store or to market. I want returns to buy troops and equipment.   • The alliance prospers
    The baggage train is covered in the flags of the new Dukedom of Gwythaor. You walk down the steps of the Winter Palace to greet the knight who rides in with this. He is a young, fiery looking warrior with straw coloured hair, a green and white chequered cloak of wool slung over one shoulder and clasped by a gold dragon medallion. Maeglwyn Le Fey at your service, m'lord (He bows in the saddle) Come inside, drink some mead with me and tell me of the new lands you wave a hand Miss Petra, run in and ask for some spice cakes and blueberry tarts The maid girl bobs and disappears.   • Witzenberg Cash
    The taxes begin to pour in over the next few days. Your steward and financiers are kept busy accounting for it all. Much is in kind. You start planning a market or two, designed to off load the saleable items. Some of the raw materials will sell to the dwarven forges and to the gnomes.
  • Von Tacchim Funding
    Duke Vasely has obviously been busy. The High Ambassador of the empire has many friends. It seems he is calling in some favours. Wood from Kralia, Ore from the dwarves in the mountains, crystals from the Richesse Islands, gems from the church, mercury from the Alchemists Guild, sulfur from the sulfur and salt mines of Karilistaan. Added to this, contributions from friends and allies fills several chests.
  • Hazakhuk
    The dwarves are insistent that Hazakhuk will remain independent and that they no longer recognise the imperial throne. This will have to be answered in blood.
  • Raga
    The news of Raga's rebellion seems to have spread widely. The situation is spreading. Already Hallstia's Duke has been dethroned and was being held by extremist religious social reformers under an unlikely warrior-priest.
  • Beresford Disposition
    The view is confirmed, by now, that the Beresford disposition of forces was thus; Edmund Beresford who had been campaigning in the Nordovician Netherlands trying to put down an uprising, had set up camp at Lonbar, re-enforced the position and raised his standard, intending, no doubt, to sweep up the Netherlands and then march east to Riassa. Cardinal Augustus Beresford was in Kangorn, in Southern Valcoria, somewhat exposed and expected to withdraw to Jordis where Ghalantine De Belveric was raising troops for the campaign. Sir John Beresford was in Brayford, Saxonia, expecting to deal with the Hood threat from Aubrey Marsham and the seizure of Saxburg. Finally
  • Hood Movements
    More news is confirmed by your agents. It is now certain that the major backing for the Hood faction is coming from Baron Vladimir Samedes-Hood, out of Montelmar. A dangerous man to cross, he may well survive the war intact, as much because everyone fears to tackle him in his own territory. The warlords were led by Duke Theobald of Cytelia who was holding Anoen at the outset. Bohardt was to land in Ilnya on the west coast and Valderic Le Clerc would have been in Le Vaune, able to move on the eastern states. Baron Aubrey Marsham was definitely in their pay with the brief to seize Saxburg and the electorial position by holding the Cardinal as a captive.
  • Ulrich
    The Ulrich position is updated on your wargame table. Map markers place Duke Alberich still skulking in Reichtergrad. However, Aghlador and Ghaldor are abroad after starting in Thuringa in position to strike eastwards and northwards. Marhaus was in the north of Thuringa, threatening Valcoria.
  • Vas Coburg and Le Var
    The alliance between Convar and Aquila has worried many. You knew, however, that Robert of Convar was going to make this move. The direction is probably from Duke Pellinore who is far away in Gwythaor. However, the leader of the alliance is Baldwin Le Var. The power of Aquila holds the key to their war. Interesting, that Sir Jocelyn Westmore, in northern Cytelia, joined them. This confirms that the Westmore-Vas Coburg alliance in the islands is probably true.
  • Witzenburg Disposition
    The Witzenberg forces certainly concentrated their power in Ilnya at the outset of the war. Duke Maximilian was in the west and Lepold to the east. However, he did have Friedrich poised on the border of Lander to strike into Lazadon while Coranus went north or west.
  • Von Tacchim Forces
    The Von Tacchim forces have managed to create the greatest coverover their movements when the war began. The picture is now, much clearer. With Duke Vasely abroad, his eldest son, Frederick, was in Littesburg preparing to hold that land while his second son, Leopold and the mercenary captain, Black Finn were poised to march out of Rosgovia. With the warlike Herlenbrand waiting on the border of Cinquemontain and Le Pays De Chevaux, they were ready to invade whatever presented itself. The cardinal, Richard Montague of Saxburg was also in their alliance. It appears that he was very isolated being in northern Saxonia.
  • Marshelyn
    The events in Marshelyn have now become clear, also. The Earl of Ranfrew, nominal ruler was arrested and incarcerated by those who felt they could run the land, better and independently. This rebellion has been in the offing like the uprising in the Nordovician Netherlands. Loss of imperial control and lack of communication has rippled through the disaffected states. Ranfrew, an experienced soldier was liable to fight for whoever freed him.
  • Malfelas
    Caught between Valcoria and the Beresford armies in the south and the warring Saxonia to the north, the chances that Malfelas could retain its alliance with the Le Var-Vas Coburg faction, were always slim.
  • Cinquemontaine
    The five heptons of Cinquemontaine are in debate. Your agents tell you that they will settle on one alliance to back with their cash reserves. Whoever controls them, later in the war, is going to be in best position. Cinquemontain could become a major prize.
