Frodo enjoys live and the walks over the country together with his friends. Long time ago, 17 years to be precise, he inherited the ring Bilbo found on his adventure trip. Gandalf the wizard, who always were interested in Bilbos ring, hasnґt shown himself since months. During their last meeting, he had revealed to Frodo that his ring is no other than the Master-ring, the one ring to rule them all. Gandalf advised Frodo to leave the Shire by time, because the Dark Lord would greatly desire the ring, and it would not be save in Bag End for long. But our kind and merry hobbit loves his home very much, and as long as there are no news from Gandalf, he doesnґt feel like leaving hastily.

Days pass by, and Frodo gets a feeling of restlessness he simply canґt explain himself.

This evening, after a few beers in the Ivy Bush, Frodo walks along the Bywater road back to the hill, as - o no! - the Sackville-Bagginses approach. Lobelia hasnґt noticed him yet, and quickly, Frodo slips on the ring and vanishes from sight. Phew, that was close!

One morning, Frodo just returned from a little walk, a letter from Gandalf arrives. Dear Frodo, when you read this message, I havenґt managed to reach you in time. Please leave immediatly via Rivendell. Make sure noone notices your depature or suspects you making a journey beyond the Shireґs boarders. Simply say you move to your relatives in Buckland. When you leave, first go south a while before you turn eastwards. There might be dangers on your path, but you might also find friends where you donґt expect them. One you can trust is called Aragorn. Yours in haste, Gandalf P.S.: Do NOT use it again, not for any reason whatever! Now he understands his restlessness better, Frodo finally takes the necessary steps. He visits some hobbit-holes to say good-bye, spreading the rumour he would move to Buckland, and departs, heading for the southern part of the Shire, intenting to meet the East Road later on.

Of course Frodo doesnґt manage to cast of all his friends. He canґt help Merry, Pippin and his faithful gardener Sam being with him. :-)

On his way through the Shire, Frodo receives a message delivered by a grey pigeon. The small parchement reads: Dear Frodo, try to reach Rivendell until the 27th day at latest. Time is short. ~G~

Frodo remembers the last evening with Gandalf at Bilbos comfortable living-room. You ought to go quietly, and you ought to go soon. the old wizard had said, while blewing a particular beautiful ring of smoke to the ceiling. I know. But if I just vanish, the tale will be all over the Shire in no time. Frodo had objected. And where am I supposed to head to? Towards danger, but not too rashly, nor too straight. If you want my advice, make for Rivendell. I shall come back soon to go with you. But Gandalf didnґt come back, and not for the last time, Frodo wishes that the One Ring had fallen to someone else, and that he would be sitting at Bag End in front of the fire-place now, enjoying a second dinner and a together a bottle of Old Winyards.

Again, Frodo thinks of past conversation with Gandalf at Bagshot Row. Once the wizard had told how he finally got hold of that dreadful Gollum, who possessed the ring before Bilbo. `What had it got in its pocketses? Little cheat. Not a fair question. It cheated first, it did. It broke the rules. We ought to have squeezed it, yes precious. And we will, precious!ґ That is a sample of his talk. But this is terrible! Frodo had started to feel uncomfortable. What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature, when he had a chance! Pity? It was pity and mercy that stayed his hand. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end...

The enemy prepares for war.

One evening at the camp fire, Boromir looks up from the flames. I do not understand all this. Why do we speak ever of hiding and destroying the Great Ring? Why should we not think that the it has come to our hands to serve us in the very hour of need? Wielding it the Lords of the Free may surely defeat the Enemy. Iґm afraid this is not possible. Aragorn replies. We canґt use it, since everything thatґs done with his power turns to evil. True-hearted Men, they will not be corrupted. We of Minas Tirith have been staunch through long years of trial. It is mad not to use the power of the Enemy against him! Without further words Boromir stamps away to his resting-place. But Aragorn keeps looking absent-minded into the glow.

The night had closed in upon them when the party finally stops to rest. The first dwarven snoores are just resounding when Legolas suddenly looks up to the dark sky. Nazgъl! The messenger of Mordor. The storm is coming. The Nazgъl have crossed the River! Let us not wait for the dawn and proceed! The camp is broken in a hurry. No rest on this side of the Great Fire. Gimli growls drowsily, stamping out the heat.
