  • The Kingdoms and the Gholam
    The Gholam is a monster that thrives on fear and hatred. The terrible wars, immorality and corruption in the kingdoms have attracted its baleful glare, and it will come to feed...on us. Alone, each kingdom will fall to the Gholam. We must unite, and cease the petty squabbling and politics.
  • The Kingdoms and the Gholam 2
    Our greatest wisemen and magi have seen glimpses of the future, and they have seen our doom. When the Gholam had come in millenia past, it would arrive and marshall its strength in order to break its earthly bonds, feeding on the corruption around. Once filled, it breaks out and destroys all. We must unite the kingdoms together and wage war on this threat. You still remember king Cirrus' words when he summoned you. I am sending you Nimbus to find clues to where the Gholam is waiting. I am hoping that we can unite the kingdoms by diplomacy, but if that fails, it is on you that our hope rests. Though young, you have distinguished yourself as a most promising warrior and mage. You know in your heart that the Gholam would not have arrived if the kingdoms were sensible enough to settle things by dipomacy. Fulminus was not a warring nation, and the king's desire for a peaceable solution was admirable, but somehow you sense that war is on the horizon. It is a heavy responsibility you bear.
  • The Kingdoms and the Gholam 5
    The troops were mostly engaged, defending the garrison against the constant incursions of the swamp kingdom of Bhog to the south, but the king has given you complete access to Fulminus, your nation and capital city. You have gleaned the last shred of knowledge from the Archmage Thaenir, your old mentor and closest thing to father you had since the death of your parents when you were still a baby. One thing continually haunts you as you prepare to leave your home. Thaenir told you of the ancient codices in the library that spoke of the disturbance the Gholam's arrival always caused in those attuned to the mystical realm. Evil creatures would begin to roam far from their abodes, attacking innocents and hording treasure and resources. From the beginning of those disturbances which signified the arrival of the Gholam, there was never more than a year before it finally broke free and destroyed all. At the most, we have one year my friend, said Thaenir. That is all. I will contact you through your Speakstone if I learn more. Fortune be with you my son, we await your news. One year. One year to unite the kingdoms, seek out, and destroy the Gholam before It is strong enough to break free. One year before all is laid waste. As you turn to go, Thaenir calls you and gives you a sack. I was saving this for a time of need, and I think now is the time. Use it wisely Nimbus. Go now. Thaenir is already back to pondering his books. With a heavy heart, you leave your old friend.
  • Where do I go?
    You remember Thaenir's advice: You may find some clues to the east where dragons have laid waste, but you must be careful when you go there, be sure you are strong enough. Otherwise, go south and see what you can glean from those wretched Bhoggers in their swamp kingdom. They have tried to sack Fulminus for more than a century, so they will not listen to reason. If you must, tear down Bhog around their heads to bring them to reason. That's all I can tell you for now. You tell the news to your best friend Phaeton, an ancient Titan. Phaeton has been around as long as you can remember, wise and kind and gentle. And horrifically strong. He, Thaenir and auntie Maron, the Good Witch of Cloud Valley, have been the only family you've ever known. You both begin to lay plans.
  • Who the Gholam is
    You shudder as you think about what you are up against. Fulminus is a land of knowledge and study. If there is anyone who might know the little data there was about Gholam, it was your people. Because the Gholam would break the nations over and over again every millennium or so, history would repeat itself, and the knowledge gained would again become lost. What little has been learned is that Gholam was basically the embodiment of all the evil that existed in a world. The more evil grew, the more Gholam would manifest itself someday and reap what the nations had sown. That time had come for your world. How to beat it? Nobody had ever succeeded as far as anyone knew. You must find the Gholam within a year before it grew strong enough to manifest itself physically and destroy all.
  • Message to Thaenir
    You touch your stone and seek out Thaenir. Yes, I am here, he says. Can you glean for me more information on the kingdoms? I need to know where they are and some of the demographics. Okay? I'll get right on it Nim. It may be a day or two. He signs off.
  • Kingdom Intelligence 1
    Your crystal glows. It's Thaenir. Nim I have the intelligence you requested about the kingdoms. You must keep this information in mind, for it will aid you in your travels. Write it down if you might forget [hint!] Our kingdom, Fulminus, lies to the furthest north. Our cousins live in the town of Stratus just southeast of us, and they will cooperate with a little persuasion. Our immediate enemies are to the south in the filthy swamp kingdom of Bhog. We have been at war more or less with them for centuries. They will not cooperate willingly, and must be subjugated again. The shanty town of Loam just south will be easy, and there is another village on the water further south that may be resisting Bhog's forces. The Fortress of Gloome is another matter. The Fortress is found in the deepest swamp at the delta of the Stygian River. Make sure you are well armed when you reach it's foul stench. Even further south across the Sea of Winds is the Barbarian nation of Cimmeria. When they aren't fighting each other, they are formidable foes. Fortunately for us, they often prefer to kill each other. At the moment we have an uncertain stalemate with them as we decide what to do about this new threat of the Gholam. I fear they too will not listen to reason, and bloodshed will be the only recourse to save us all. Never show weakness to a Cimmerian Nimbus.
  • Kingdom Intelligence 2
    There is a land of sand east of Cimmeria, the harsh desert of Dunara. Dunara has never been explored by Fulminarians, but I do believe that in the desert are many sources of lore that I am sure you will need to find the Gholam's location. Make sure you have our best troops with you then. Now Nimbus, near the desert, is a strange and beautiful land of moutains and fields, called Sentinel. It ought to be desert too, or at least wasteland like Cimmeria, but instead it is green and beautiful. What little we know is from detecting the strong magic that is emitted from there, but the people there keep to themselves. There is also another land even snowier than ours called Spartica furthest to the south, a place of perpetual winter. Spartica is said to be a land of regimented knights who honor their own code and no other.
  • Kingdom Intelligence 3
    There is also an inland sea south of Cimmeria. The Cimmerians know more about it than we do. But we have determined that there is a monk of renown on an island there. Getting across the waters will be a problem, but if you succeed in getting to the island, he may be able to help you as well. Oh, and one more thing. As you know, to the far east is the Great Expanse of water. The oceans have been scarcely explored by anyone in the last centuries since the Breaking, much less by our own people. All we know from lore is that the kingdom of Atlantis fell over 1000 years ago, and the ruins are somewhere east, probably submerged in the ocean. Fare thee well Nimbus. Thaenir signs off, and you are left pondering. Bhog is your first obstacle, and the poisonous marshes will not be easy. Then, how to get across the sea to Cimmeria? And what about those terrible dragons to the east? You lay your plans carefully.
  • Trembling soldiers
    Making the rounds one night of your small army, you notice one gremlin trembling by himself. You walk over and sit down beside him. Startled, he notices you. Master Nimbus sir! He starts to get up to salute. Sit down, sit down. I noticed that you seemed upset. Tell me your name and what's wrong. I am Gnafy sir, Master Gremlin under High Gremlin Tnoddy's 2nd Regement. Why aren't you getting some much needed sleep? He seems to hesitate, looking nervously at the ground. You patiently wait. Sir Nimbus sir, it's th-that creature, the unnameable one! You mean Gholam, Gnaffy? At that name he covers his ears. You are alarmed at this. It ap-p-pears in my n-nightmares sir! Tears stream down his face. It's horrible! It will destroy my family, our nation, our world... He breaks down and sobs. Gently you have him drink a sleeping draught. It looks like it has begun.
  • MajorTremor
    With a start, you awake in the middle of the night to dead silence. Not a creature is stirring, even the wind is hushed. Suddenly, like a herd of stampeding Behemoths the camp is thrown into turmoil as an earthquake shakes Fulminus! Within moments it passes, but it takes your army several hours to clean up. A few are wounded, but thankfully, no one is seriously hurt. Your Speakstone glows. Yes Thaenir? Are you okay? he says, concern in his voice. Yes fine, things were just thrown into chaos for a while there. Any idea where the epicenter is? Thank goodness you're okay. That earthquake was just another of many portents to come Nimbus. Yes our magic localized the epicenter. The center of the earthquake was south, perhaps in Bhog, or the Sea of Winds. It may have hurt our enemies more than us. The city is okay, but the people are afraid. Keep pressing on, don't delay. Okay, thanks Thaenir. Nimbus out.
  • Gem deposits
    Thaenir calls you. Nim, the Good Witch Maron in Cloud Valley has contacted me. It seems she is a Planeswalker, one who travels the paths between worlds! It is magic we do not even know! Anyway, in a recent journey she has come across a map with the directions to an old Giant's stash from ages past. It took a while for her to figure out the meaning, but sure enough, it is here on our land! The location is in a secluded wood just north of the dragon cave. Our need has never been greater! We sent out a work crew of golems by night in the hopes the dragons wouldn't discover us or the cache. And? And? you say. And success! We are making every gold piece and resource available to you as you see fit. Wonderful news, thank the Good Witch for me! Very well Nimbus, Thaenir out.
  • Bad dreams
    You feel your shoulder being roughly pushed and you awaken quickly. The rough push was Phaeton gently prodding you with his pinky. Nim, come outside, you've got to hear this. His face looks a little too grim for comfort. You step out of your tent and follow him into camp. Suddenly the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Every few feet you can hear one of soldiers crying out in their sleep as if tormented by horrible nightmares. Their cries seem to punctuate the still night. It unnerves you as you make out some of the words...No, no leave me be, aaaaaaaaahhh!! Not my child, not her, take me not her! Bugs, bugs all around me! In my hair, under my skinnnnnn... You stay awake for the rest of the night. That morning the troops are dispirited.
  • Get to Bhog
    Phaeton, the only way we can shake off these bad nights is by action! Is there any hope of getting intelligence on Bhog? Nim, you know our people don't do well in their blasted swamps. Even the animated golems simply sink into their quicksands. And the gargoyles cannot fly long distances without getting intercepted by their serpent flies and wyverns. All we know is that Gloome Fortress is guarded quite heavily and we need to be strong when we get there. It's time to get down there and see for yourself.
  • Rainy Season in Bhog
    A massive thunderburst awakens you. As the echoes of thunder die down, rain begins to pour down. The next day, the weather mage predicts heavy rain for the whole of next week. This is bad news, for the denizens of Bhog always agitate during heavy rain. You resolve to attack Bhog soon with all the power you have.
  • Phaeton gets dreams?
    One day, while on the march, you ask Phaeton something. Phaeton, I haven't had any bad dreams yet really. My nights are bad enough just worrying about this whole mess we're in. But no nightmares. But you seem to sleep soundly enough. I can hear, no, I can FEEL your snores from my tent! What's your secret? He looks down on you. Nim, didn't you know? Our people are descendants of the gods themselves. Magic that affects the mind cannot touch a Titan. We are immune to it. That is why my dreams are always about Cerena! Now THAT is a Titan let me tell you...in all the right parts... Sigh. Here he goes again.
  • Tremors increase
    Another small tremor shakes the ground today. A reminder that time is ticking against you...
  • Go to Cimmeria. War with them.
    The voice of Thaenir awakens you. Nim, there is to be war with Cimmeria. We have failed to convince them of the danger, and now they have declared war on us. The fools! you mutter. We have no choice now. When you have destroyed Bhog, you must go south to Cimmeria and mercilessly subjugate those foolish Barbarians. Only with their combined might do we have a chance. So it is to be a confrontation with the mighty Barbarian nation. The Fulminarians were generally a peaceable if arrogant people, given less to war and more to the study of magic. But you rouse yourself for the conquest that must be in order for the world to be safe guarded. You hope your resolve does not crumble when it is time.
  • Sentinelans are Elves
    But Thaenir is not done. There is some good news! We've discovered that the kingdom of Sentinel is an Elvish kingdom. The reason we know is because they have contacted US! They know of our quest, and can be of great help to us. They've asked you to see them. Visit them as soon as possible. They told us they are north of the Barbarian town called Tecton. Fare thee well champion. Thaenir signs off. Barbarian enemies and Elven friends? This is one for your diary.
  • War Council 1
    You call your generals together. We need to take stock of where we are. Bhog is not much of a problem, but there are still dragons that have destroyed much of Fulminus' east reaches. We need to stop them. Then there is the barbarian threat across the sea of winds. We now know that boats can be built from Gloome, so that is our way across. Also, the Elves of Sentinel wish to speak with us, and this may be the lead we seek. Anything we've missed? Phaeton speaks up. Nim, there is the monks that Thaenir brought up that are south of Cimmeria. Yes, that is true Phaeton. We need to find a way to get there too. Perhaps another hero can check it out for us. Any other observations? A Naga Queen named Phiele, another of your generals, speaks in her sibiliant voice: Well sir, since the earthquake, it looks like a way to the underground has opened up. Perhaps there may be other clues to find underground. Good thought. We must try every available avenue. Anything else? Nothing more it seems. Alright then, we've got some leads, and we will act on them immediately. Thank you, that will be all.
  • Gholam underground
    The next night, Phaeton comes around, seemingly to talk. His usually confident nature seems subdued. What is it my friend? you ask. It's what Pheile said yesterday Nim. About going underground. Your eye brows raise in surprise. You aren't scared of going underground are you?! The look of incredulity on his face brings you back to reality. Titans feared nothing. Sorry Phaeton, just kidding. But what's the problem with underground? I....well.... Phaeton hesitating? You are a little nervous now. I spoke to an old hag I met in the bog a few days back. She heard of the nightmares the troops have been getting. She herself has become mostly mad from the nightmares. She kept babbling that Its prision is underground...and with what Phiele... Phaeton this is incredibly important! Why didn't you tell me sooner? Well, she seemed to be so incoherent, I didn't think it could be true, but I think if we're going underground, we need to just keep that in mind. Sorry Nim, I'll tell you anything new immediately next time. He stomps off, and you are so deep in thought you barely notice the ground shaking from his steps.
  • Chaos in the Kingdoms
    Thaenir calls to you. Nim, it is good to see you are okay. Fulminus has lost all contact with the kingdoms. Our king has no real power, and chaos is everywhere. Just today martial law has been called to quell the rioting. I fear the Tower is the last semblance of order we have left in Fulminus. Panic is in the air. I am sending some of our last reserves to help you. Cimmeria must be conquered before they are too strong. Remember to check any taverns along your way for information. Please be careful though. You are our last hope. So much to do and so little time.
  • Gholam's Generals
    Nimbus! Your Speakstone glows urgently. You awake out of sound sleep. What is it Thaenir? You yawn sleepily. The Tower has found some vital information you need to know! Gholam has never come to this world without creatures in its control to do its bidding. These creatures aid Its arrival, and even work to speed it. We now know there is at least one general alive right now! Thankfully, he too is imprisoned like his master, but he is trying to escape his confines. Find him and he will certainly have clues to where Gholam is. You snap wide awake now.
  • General Thanatos
    Is there more information on this general? Why is this general imprisoned? This may be the break you needed. Yes there's more! He...it...used to be human, and we know his name! This general's name is Lord Thanatos, also known in many people's history as the ruler of the Undead. You feel your heart skip. Good grief, undead? What next?! As if reading your mind, Thaenir says, Yes it is true Nim, the undead do his bidding. I know how that sounds. But the news is not all bad. We also found out through our scrying that he lies imprisoned by living rock. He is not free...yet. It seems he was defeated by an Archmage of great power in a terrible battle in the desert of Dunara over 1000 years ago, just before Atlantis' fall. The dead roam the battlefield still, looking for their lost master. That's why Dunara must be explored by you and you alone. You must find him! I need not tell you Nimbus that he is deadly. The unliving obey his every command, and he is known to have been a master tactician in life. You must discover his prison and defeat him before he gets out of his tomb for surely Gholam will break him out soon. And even more importantly, find out where his master is hiding! But remember my friend, there is probably more than one general marshalling Gholam's forces together. Dunara will hold the clues of his whereabouts, but be careful once there! As if swamp things and berserker barbarians wasn't enough. Now you have to face the Undead king.
  • War Council 2
    You call another war council. Men...and women...(the Nagas sniff at you), we have discovered that Dunara was the site of a great battle between an Archmage and a creature named Thanatos, an Undead king. Your officers do not like the sound of the word 'undead'. We believe this Thanatos is one of Gholam's generals, and the way to Gholam is through Thanatos. We must make our way to Dunara, on top of all the other things, and seek out where this Thanatos is. We will crush his undead army and get the answers we need, even if we have to kill him again to do it! There is a cheer as the officers leave, their morale high. But you yourself are not so confident. Though you must be optimistic if there is to be any hope, the thought of the burning desert and finding an ancient lichking causes you to tremble. You try to focus on the task at hand. Bhog, the dragons, Cimmeria...you drift off.
  • How goes it?
    You and Phaeton are talking tactics a few days later. Nimbus, remember we need Bhog's captial of Gloome so we can get across the sea to Cimmeria and conquer them before they are too strong. It is a key strategic location. We must not delay too long. And don't forget those dragons near our home, the valuable treasure there may aid the cause. What about the other lands Phaeton? you ask. What about these mysterious Winter Knights? We don't know anything about them! And what about these elves of Sentinel? Can we bypass them if we don't have time? Well, we certainly cannot trust these Sparticans to the far south, I wager we'll have to come to blows with them too or they will threaten us sooner or later. I have heard they respect no law but their own. As for Sentinel, who knows? If they can help in any way we ought to at least talk to them. Anyway, they seem friendly enough, though in these times I don't trust anyone farther than I can throw them. Which is actually a very, very long way, you think to yourself. So much to do yet. And then what about Thanatos, and the monks you were to see for vital information on their remote island south of Cimmeria? This must be what's it like to be a leader, you muse. To be totally overhwhelmed and still have to make the right decisions on what to do first. You shake your head and try to make up your mind where to go next.
  • Talk to Thaenir
    You feel the need that night to talk to Thaenir. The Speakstones are not easy to use and take a lot of magic strength, especially at longer distances. But you need your old mentor tonight. Thaenir? Are you there? Nim! How are you lad? He sounds so happy to hear from you. Thaenir how do I know I can do this? It seems so impossible...so much to do... My dear son... he says. There is silence for a while, nothing needs to be said, you just know that he is there for you. After a minute, he breaks the silence. Nim you are special. You have outstripped every mage in Fulminus, and your prowess with the sword is unequalled...well except for Phaeton! And I may have outstripped every mage, except for you Thaenir! you say. Well, be that as it may, you are stronger than you know Nim. You have qualities that no Fulminarian possesses. Your power with magic, especially air and earth is something that has never been seen before! It's as if magic runs in your blood! If anyone in our world has hope, it is you. I know you can do it. Thanks Thaenir. But more than any skills or magic or whatever else, it is people like you and Phaeton and the Good Witch that give me strength. Thank you. You sign off, and rest well for the first time in weeks.
  • Konan Threatens
    Thaenir calls you today. Nimbus, Konan of Cimmeria has contacted us. We don't know how they got the magic to use Speakstones, but somehow they have! Well I'll let you hear the message yourself... The magic of the stone lets you hear Konan's voice. Foolish Fulminarian. I seek Nimbus the 'hero'. He says the word with contempt. We have massed our great strength to deal with the Deathgiver ourselves. We do not need your puny army! Our Behemoths roar even now in anticipation of the slaughter! You will either surrender to me now, or be ground under my boot. You cannot resist the hordes that await you. You have 24 hours to respond. Konan's laughter ends the message. You think about what you heard for a moment. Thaenir, king Cirrus has already given me my task. It is they who will be subjugated. Answer Konan with this: We offered to ally with you to fight this threat together and you refused. So be it. You will not need to come to us to fight, for I will find you Konan and all your blind barbarian followers. Prepare yourself. The barbarian battle lust is legendary. Maybe by goading them you can use their blind love of battle to your advantage. In any case, they will be conquered. You have never been more determined.
  • War council 3
    The next day you tell your officers of Konan's threat. It is now a war not only to save our world from Gholam, but from our foolish barbarians who wish to conquer us. I want training exercises increased to 2 hours a day. But sir, says an archmage named Talus, on top of the marching too? Can the troops take such a pace? They must Talus. Listen, all of you. If we don't find Gholam before the year's up, we're all dead. We have no choice. Whatever it costs us for the extra training, must be done. We're fighting for our survival. Go to your assigned tasks. They leave you alone. You've always been alone really. You get up and go through your sword routines before you practice your incantations.
  • Spartica and Cimmeria unite!
    It's Thaenir again, and he sounds terribly agitated. What's wrong Thaenir? You don't like how old he sounds. Nimbus, more unfortunate news. Our intelligence reports show that Cimmeria and Spartica have allied themselves! It seems they too are trying to stop Gholam in their own way. It is beyond me what could unite a nation of order like Spartica and a nation of chaos like Cimmeria. But the end result is that they are going to try to subjugate us in full force! I was hoping they might weaken each other, but now you face their combined might. His voice sounds distraught. The mighty archmage seems frail and broken. You gaze down at your army. You look at Phaeton, your high general, your other titan, naga, genie, and archmage commanders, and then at the rest of your troops with pride. You are used to being the underdog. All your life you've lived with no parents but a kind mage who did his best to be a parent to you. You've heard the laughter before, you've felt the sting of the name calling, you've cried your tears. You will face what you must face for the same reason you always had before: because there was no other way. Thaenir old friend, don't worry, we will prevail. The barbarian hordes are mighty but not too intelligent. This will be their undoing. We will outhink them on the battle field. The Sparticans will rely on their rigid discipline when in battle. This will make them predictable. In the end, it is not just brawn, but brain that will determine the outcome. You are right! Good lad! The note of pride in Thaenir's voice is unmistakable.
  • Konan Speaks again
    A jarring note from the Speakstone interrupts your practice. So Nimbus, we speak at last. Through the Speakstone you hear the voice of a perennially gruff and angry voice. Konan. I am Konan, hero of Cimmeria. It suddenly occurrs to you that they must have found the magic of the Speakstones through the Sparticans. Barbarians were children when it came to magic. You sigh. I was wondering when I would hear from you, Lord Sturm, you reply. I will be brief. Give up your foolish quest. We have the matter in hand concerning the Beast. Your surrender is required so we might use your cities as staging points. Give in now and your people will be spared as vassals to us as Cimmeria has. You always knew that Spartica was behind this, the Barbarians were too undisciplined. He continues, Resist and you will fare worse than if the Beast got to you first. Once mercy has been refused, we are implacable and we will destroy your people as our blood enemies. Do not force me to make an example of you all. Lord Sturm, listen to me please! We can join together, we can fight this evil side by side, why must it come to this? This evil needs all our strength combined! We need unity, not the dictatorship of one nation over another. Please reconsider your words! The arrogance and hubris in his stern voice is unmistakeable. WE are chosen foolish Fulminarian, it is OUR destiny to rule this world with our regiments and battalions, OUR order, OUR great laws! There is no other future!     That night you cannot sleep. Sturm's last words haunt you...So be it. It sounded so final, so drastic. There was to be no allies, no friends...well, except maybe the elves... But could even they be trusted? Maybe by the time you got to them they would be destroyed by the barbarians, or worse, by the Sparticans. It seemed so hopeless... It was times like these when you would run to the Good Witch. She would tell you strange and wonderful stories of far away places, from the distant past. Somehow she'd make the stories seem so real, so present, almost as if you were really there. It would chase away all the bad feelings and thoughts. Sometimes you feel that she kept you from falling into darkness, from pursuing the dark path. Thanatos gave himself to the dark, and now he had power even eternal undeath. What was the point of fighting? But somehow the Good Witch helped you see that to do right, even when facing death, was better than evil. You push away the temptation to take the easy path, to follow the dark road. Maron was right. You would fight till your last breath.

    You've been doing a lot of thinking lately about this whole mess. It was so easy to focus on just the war with the nations on your hands, but you've been trained to think laterally, to go beyond the obvious. There was more to this than just conquering Cimmeria and Spartica. It was not just might that you needed, it was knowledge. History seemed to be a critical source of information. You still remember old Thaenir teaching history. He would talk about the nations that formed after the Breaking of Atlantis, and how those broken nations didn't even know of each other's existence for many centuries. It was a dark time. Really, it was Fulminus that was the first to civilize and begin to search the stars and the old tomes in the half-destroyed libraries. Those old books were indecipherable at first, but with great effort, the Fulminarians began to trace what happened to their world, and learned of the dreaded Gholam. History only went back far enough to the last Breaking of Atlantis. Atlantis was a great empire, far superior to any today, a great people of magic and lore...You make a sudden decision. You contact your mentor. Archmage Thaenir! Thaenir wake up! Sooner that you would have thought, he is there with his voice strong and clear. Yes Nimbus what is it? Are you alright? Thaenir I can't shake the feeling that Atlantis has something to do with all this. Can you find out what you can about its fall and report back?     Thaenir contacts you suddenly: The old witch in Fulminus had some tomes that detailed the fall of Atlantis. She is an amazing person, more than I ever thought! When this is over, I must ask her to teach me a thing or two... Anyway, Atlantis as you know was a great civilization until it fell to the Gholam. It seems that they had a great Archmage named Arcane, who was sent to try to stop Gholam as you are! This Archmage unlocked magics that have been long buried in the past. Be on the lookout for any information on him, he may give us critical clues. Arcane, Arcane...where have you heard that name before? When Atlantis fell many centuries ago, the land was thrown into great turmoil. Earthquakes shook and destroyed many lands, and rent asunder whole kingdoms. It is said that the Sea of Sand in Dunara used to be a land lush with forests and water. Now it is dead. Atlantis itself sunk into the sea. Our world as we know it now was far different before the Gholam. Thanks for your help Thaenir. Nim...I need to really talk with you about something... Sure. Go ahead. No. Give me a couple of days. Destiny has given you to us at this very time, to save us all. YOU are the prophecy, you are our only hope! You are speechless. I know Nimbus, this is hard to understand.     With the news of your shadowed past, and the alliance of the barbarians and knights, you have slept little of late. The troops notice your perpetual worry, and their faces begin to mirror your own concern. You try to put on a good face, but your thoughts keep whirling in your head. Who were you? Who were your parents? Where did you come from? You feel empty and alone.

Then, like a broken dam, your story comes out, how you were found by Thaenir on the door step of the tower, how you were supposedly supposed to save the world. It made no sense. Phaeton senses that is not what bothers you the most. You want to know who you are, don't you? You look up at him, and this time you can't see his worried face because it is blurred by your tears. Nim, you are who you have made yourself to be. Remember when you and I wandered into Bhog looking for a Mighty Gorgon and betting who could stare at its eyes until the last second? That's who you are. Remember when Maron the Good Witch would find you crying in the king's forest behind the castle because the older apprentices who weren't as talented as you, were bullying you, and you would forgive them all? That's who you are. Remember besting even some of the Naga Queens in hand to hand combat in the king's tournament? I never saw a sword move that fast. That's who you are. Nim, you may not know your parents, but I know who you are now. You are my dearest friend, and the commander of the armies of Fulminus. Hail leige lord! You cannot speak. Phaeton understands, and quietly (for a Titan) leaves you alone. Dear Phaeton. I am what I make of myself. It helped a bit.

    You are ready to talk to your mentor. More than a week has past since you talked to your guardian and friend. You touch your SpeakStone. Thaenir are you there? Thaenir, it's me, where are you? No answer. He hadn't called for a while now either. This was the first time he hadn't received your communication. Was something wrong in Fulminus?
  • Trying Thaenir again
    You try to reach the old Archmage again, with no results. You haven't heard from him in weeks, and now he doesn't respond to your summons at all. The uneasy feeling deepens.

    You feel your SpeakStone call to you. Finally Thaenir! M-my liege! Who are you? you demand. It is I, Nadur, Locutor for the 4th ring of the Tower. The man's voice shakes with fear. Panic courses through your body. What is it man? Speak! Thaenir is dead milord! Dead! It's been chaos here, chaos!

    Dead? Your mentor, your friend, dead. For a moment you cannot speak. Then you say shakily, How Nadur? S-slain milord in his sleep, with nary a chance! The assassins didn't have the courage to face him, so they infected him with a horrible decaying disease that killed him within hours. He never even awoke! Who did this atrocity Nadur? you rage. Someone would die for this!! In your veins you feel something flowing white and hot, your heart begins to pound, you don't even notice that the air is crackling around you with magical energy! Why wasn't I notified of this immediately? I've been trying to call him for a days! It took us this long just to locate and undo the wards on the SpeakStone, milord, and I have been chosen to speak on behalf of the Tower. The council has yet to convene in light of the upheaval here, but we will let you know as soon as we find out. You can hear the terror in his voice.

    You notice the edges of your tent are beginning to singe from the energy blazing from you, and with an effort you control it. Nadur, you say, your voice steeled, I want to know the perpetrator as soon as possible. Convene the council NOW! It shall be done, he says. Go Nadur, our time runs short. Yes milord, farewell. You hold back a groan of sorrow. Suddenly the magic is gone, and you collapse in a heap. Thaenir. Once again murder steals those who were your guardians, your mentors, your...parents. At least so you thought until Thaenir's revelation. And now he too was gone...You choke back a sob. Instead of the blazing heat, you struggle now with the terrible cold hatred like a lump of ice within you, that would seek to take over your mind and make you its slave. You must not give in to hatred you realize, lest you speed Gholam's coming, but all you could think about is the kindly archmage, slain in his sleep. Thaenir...

    Nimbus, it's me, Nadur! The Speakstone! Well? Your voice is urgent. Who is the murderer? The assassins were Bhoggers, who worship a god they named Virux, Lord of Disease. One of these abominations have been captured! Will you interrogate one of them? Bhog again! The heat begins to build in your chest again... Yes, Nadur, bring it to the SpeakStone!

    Through the stone you detect a lizardman. Miserable wretch. You thunder through the Speakstone. Who is your master? Every beat of your heart increases the pressure in you, your head is pounding now. Your magic reaches through the Speakstone and mercilessly pummels the creature. The Lizardman's voice is fanatical in its fervor. Virux, Virux awakens, infects, inflames, intoxicates! You will soon feel him multiply in your blood, in your organs, in your mind! Fools! The Pestilence comes! The rest is gibberish. You can contain yourself no longer, with a surge of power you crush the lizardman in an invisible fist. Nadur's gasp of horror is audible. Screams could be heard in background. It is war Nadur. Do not forget it. Yes milord. Sir, there is more. The council has suspended all proceedings indefinitely, and have disbanded. It's everyone for himself now. There are a few here in the Tower who cling to any hope at all!

    What this means Nimbus is that you are now by default the icon and leader of our shepherdless people. The king is ailing. What is your command? The news leaves you shocked yet again. You feel as if events were moving too fast for you to even have time to think about it let alone act. Ruler of Fulminus. Uniting everyone was like sand running through your fingers. You take a deep breath and calm the thrumming in your head. Nadur, here are my instructions. Whoever remains of the Tower must continue the search for lore on Gholam, may its name be cursed! We must increase conscription of the Titans, friendly Naga and Djinn. And be alert for further incursions of those fanatical Bhoggers, and find out who this Virux is! Keep me informed of anything unusual. Most of all, I want Thaenir's body looked after. Can you do this? It shall be done to the best of my ability milord, Nadur says. You master your rage and hatred. Well done Nadur. We all miss Thaenir. I know he was a good master to the Tower. He was like a father to me. But he would have us go on Nadur. Courage. We must go on. His voice strengthens in resolve.     You call the officers together in the war council tent. Officers of Fulminus. Your voice rivets their attention. I will be brief. A cult of the Bhoggers who worship a god they named Virux has infiltrated the Tower. They have struck. Archmage Thaenir is dead. Chaos ensues in the tent. SILENCE! You may speak after the meeting is done. We will track down this Virux, do not fear. Your face is a mask. We will subjugate every nation before us as we have done with Bhog. Today, and everyday for the next week, every flag will be at half mast and training will stop in honor of our Archmage. You will instruct your troops accordingly. Leave me now. They leave silently, but soon the entire camp is awash with the terrible news. You feel as if you have no more tears to shed anyway.

    Lord Nimbus! says Nadur. King Cirrus is dead! His body could not take the strain of the recent events, and nothing could heal him. The nobles squabble over who is next king, but all look to you as the only one with real power. There is talk of you being our next king! I for one throw my lot with you!

    You ponder his message for a minute. To be king? Wouldn't that be great? With your growing legions nothing could stop you...You could smash everything that had every hurt you... But then you remember how you wanted to have a peaceful life, away from the intrigue of the court and the false masks the nobles wore. You think of the treachery that killed your mentor, you think of the reasons that the world is in the state it is now. Thaenir's noble memory chases away such proud thoughts of being king. Thaenir would never want hatred to rule your life. You make up your mind. You will not be swayed in your course. Nadur, I will lead our people until this threat is over or we are all dead. After that I have no desire to rule. Maybe it's time for a better way to run Fulminus. We will talk more on this later. I will think on what you said Nimbus. Farewell. You lose yourself in thought.

    Nadur! Yes milord! Appeal to the Titans and Nagas and Djinn for more troops. We need to push forward quickly! Increase conscription of the cities of Bhog. But sir, can they be trusted?     That night you dream...You dream of Cloud Lake and the breeze in the summer. You remember the young girls who would be at the beach and your red face when they would stare at you and giggle. It seems like so long ago... Suddenly, like twin lamps in the gloom, two burning eyes intrude into your dream, peering this way and that. Suddenly the eyes notice you and blaze your way. At their horrible gaze you feel your blood drain and fear leech into your marrow. You awaken with a start, covered with sweat, weak and trembling.

    Your SpeakStone calls to you. It's Nadur. Sire, it is very strange, and I thought I ought to report it. The witch in Cloud Valley is gone! Her hut is as though nobody has ever lived there. You ponder this news. You have meant to talk to her for a while now. She mentioned she needed to say something to you. She also mentioned that you needed to find one of her sisters, you suppose she meant another witch. What was her name again? Yeah, Adriana, and she lived on an island near the Fortress of Gloome. Maron's mysterious words and now her disappearance leaves you believing that you needed to find this Adriana. Maybe she knew what was going on. Strange she left without telling you anything. Was she abducted? Or did she flee?

    The next day, you contact Nadur. Nadur, I want you to sent a search party to look for Maron. Let me know if you get any clues, no matter how vague. Yes sir. Nadur out.
  • Talking with Phaeton
    You are talking with your friend, Phaeton. He tells you of how his ancestors had ruled in sky kingdoms before the coming of humans. One of the greatest Titan Lords was Chronos. Chronos saw that there was a great imbalance coming upon the world, and it was caused by the spread of evil dragons. It was he that nurtured the good dragons to power. Without the good dragons, the evil blacks, reds, wyverns, and even the terrible rusts, would have overrun the earth. Because of the work of Chronos, who protected the eggs in a secret chamber, there were golds, greens, and even a few rare faerie dragons to fight back. During the great Dragon Wars, the evil dragons were repulsed, and balance was restored. Chronos was a great hero, not only to our people, but to the good dragons too. You wonder if there are any good dragons left to help your cause.

    Your people must be proud to have such a history, you say. Well Nim, our people had to learn from our mistakes too. There have been evil Titan renegades in our history too. You find that hard to believe, the Titans are renowned for their nobility and integrity. The Gholam is a threat to us all Nim, for our people have faced the Breaking before, that is why we have learned the secret folly of pride. Yes, pride, the need to arrogantly be over another, to lift oneself at the expense of others, this seemed to be the downfall of every civilization. What of Chronos then? you ask. Chronos was buried in the sea with his great sword Hephaestus near some huge granite cliffs. The cliffs themselves were carved into a memorial for others to see, but his resting place is now lost since the earthquakes from the last breaking. But Nim, listen to this: it is said that near his resting place was a place our people called Nexus, for it was the pole of magic's energies. At the pole the magic is as tangible as the wind, our people would bathe there and be re-energized.

There are THREE generals protecting Gholam and the third is the strongest of all. We know of Thanatos and Virux, but almost nothing of the third. The news hits you hard. Thanatos, that cursed Virux, and now what? Well done Nadur. I realize now what we are up against. How many of you are left? Nadur says, Of the Tower there are but 8 of us. The rest have fled and made magical shelters, as if that will help them! The fools! you mutter. If you ever make it back you will deal with their cowardice. Nimbus out. Three generals. Thantos, Lord of the Undead, Virux, Lord of Disease, and now the mysterious third. And where could this last creature be found? It seemed so impossible to find them all in time. You know you will find clues of Thanatos in the desert of Dunara. But then what?
  • Dream of Maron
    That night you have another of the many strange dreams and nightmares that have been afflicting you of late. You see a giant plunging waterfall, but there is no true sunlight, only the flicker of torches lets you see the water. As you ponder the waterfall, you hear a very tiny voice tugging at the back of your mind. nnnimmmbusss niiimbuuuus... The voice is unmistakable! It is the voice of the Good Witch Maron! I hear you Maron I hear you! you shout in your dream. hhheeellpp meeee... fiiinndd meee... I am undergrou- Her faint voice cuts off as a Presence intrudes on your dream. The sense of malevolence smashes into you. Without any warning, you feel your lungs and heart cease to function! You are dying within seconds as you struggle to awake from the nightmare. A strong blow to your side abruply awakes you, and you see the huge concerned face of Phaeton looking down. I heard you struggling and when I looked I didn't see you breathing Nimbus! Are you alright? With a gasp you begin breathing and your heart lurches in your chest and begins beating. You are terribly shaken, and you remain awake for the rest of the night telling Phaeton of the experience. Maron underground somewhere, calling for help? You can't shake the chills that come upon you.

    march march march You hear the sound of footsteps marching, and suddenly realize it is your own footsteps. You are in a corridor that seems...alive. You are horrified at what looks like fluid coming out of the walls. Darkness swallows up your previous steps, and ahead the corridor seems to go on and on and on.... You awaken feeling weary and unrested.

    It's Nadur. Sire, we have pooled our resources. Those who remain in the tower have ransacked their own estates to bring this to you. Many in Fulminus still do not believe in you, but we here know there is no other hope. Some are trying to make pacts with Gholam, as if It would listen, as if It cared for such things. Executions have begun in Fulminus to quell the unrest, but I fear it gets worse. Hang on sir, we believe in you!
  • Alone
    Phaeton, we are running out of time. Are we ever going to be able to save our world? You feel his compassionate glance. We must persevere my friend. Though time is short, I sense we are ever closer. Don't give up. You've always felt abandoned. Orphaned and alone, that's me, you say to yourself. Even with Phaeton you feel lonelier than ever in your life.
  • Feeling alone
    At midnight you get up and walk outside. The stars are out tonight. They seem only to mock the plight of your world. They'll keep shining whether or not you're alive to see them. The feeling of loneliness almost drives you to despair. How can you hope to reach the Gholam in time? You pick up the amulet that the Good Witch had given you when you were just a small boy. It seems to tingle in your hand for a moment. It might have been nothing. But maybe you weren't as alone as you thought.

    You awaken with a start. Your warrior sense tells you something is not right. Suddenly with an unearthly scream, a strong earthquake begins! The army is thrown apart and even the Titans grimly stumble at the fury of the tremor. The shaking continues for only a minute, but that is all it takes for your camp to be in complete chaos. This one was the strongest ever. Its coming, you think grimly to yourself.
  • Signs
    Phaeton mutters to you one night, Nimbus the sky is wrong. Look at the moon! As you look, you see the moon a bloody color, as if it had been mortally wounded. This is another sign the Sprite Seers foretold of the end, Phaeton rumbles to you. Then we must press forward with greater haste, you answer. Earthquakes, the moon. What was next?

    The ruler of Sentinel contacts you through the SpeakStone! Friend Nimbus, we contact you out of urgent necessity. Our Seers sense the storm is almost here. We cling to the hope that you will prevail. Our gold dragons have told us of their wish to fight with you till the bitter end. The last of them are winging their way to Silvanesti for you to take. We send the last of our resources to aid you. Hurry dragon friend, find the passage to Gholam before we are undone!

    The time is almost gone. You feel dread crushing out your spirit. You are magically attuned enough to sense the nearness of its coming, like a gigantic thunderstorm just over the horizon. Already small tremors shake the ground almost constantly, and strange signs are in the heavens. You pull your cloak tighter around you. With your dying breath your will fight it, for there is nothing else to do.

You barely get the words out. W-who was it then? Who are my parents? Nimbus you are of Atlantis! You are the son of none other than Arcane Shadowbane himself! Your legs lose their strength. The cavern seems to spin about you. How can that be? HOW?! You clutch your head and scream in anguish. Nimbus, you were born after Arcane set out to destroy Gholam. At your birth the Seers of Qualinost arrived to announce before the astonished court that you would save us all! I too am of Atlantis. And I was there when the words were spoken. You caused quite a stir let me tell you! When we heard the news we rejoiced, assuming that Atlantis would survive since the Seers were never wrong. But we didn't understand the prophecy. When the Breaking began soon after, the Seers opened a portal to send you to another plane, to safety. Adriana and I took you and escaped. However, the portal was not made quickly enough to escape the effect of Gholam's coming, and time was altered by the Breaking. When we came back to this world, many centuries had passed since the last Breaking, since the fall of our beloved Atlantis. We haven't had enough time to prepare you; Gholam seemed to know of our plan.
