  • Day 1
The three strangers stood before the bronze gate, dumbfounded & disoriented. Not sure of where they were or how they got there. Suddenly they became aware of one another & sensed the bewilderment that each held. In each of their eyes the question was asked, who are you & how did you come to be here. Hoping to find in the others answer the mystery of their own arrival at this place & time.
  • Day 1
The man with the umber coloerd skin spoke first.... When the last days were upon me, & the ugly trifles of existence began to drive me to madness like the small drops of water that torturers let fall ceaselessly upon one spot of their victims body, I loved the irradiate refuge of sleep. In my dreams I found a little of the beauty I had vainly sought in life, & wandered through old gardens & enchanted woods. When the gentle rain fell I glided in a barge down a sunless stream under the earth till I reached another world of purple twilight, iridescent arbours, & undying roses. I walked through a golden valley that led to shadowy groves & ruins, & ended in a mighty wall green with antique vines, & piereced by a little gate of bronze.
  • Day 1
Then the women with the flaming red hair began to speak.....Night after night in the solitude of the midnight hours I would climb the stairs to the roof & peer aloft to glimpse some fragment of things beyond the waking world. I began to call the slow sailing stars by name, & to follow them in fancy when they glided regretfully out of sight; till at lenght my vision opened to many secret vistas whose existance no common eye suspected. and one night a mighty gulf was bridged, & the dream haunted skies swelled down to my window to merge with the close air of my room & make me a part of their fabulous wonder. There came to that room wild streams of violet midnight gilttering with dust of gold, vortices of dust & fire, swirling out of the ultimate spaces & heavy pefumes from beyond the worlds. Opiate oceans poured there, litten by suns that the eye may never behold & having in their whirlpools strange dolphins & sea-nymphs of unrememberable depths. Noiseless infinity eddied around me & wafted me away without touching my body. And for days not counted in mens calanders the tides of far spheres bore me gently to join the course of other cycles that tenderly left me sleeping on a green sunrise shore.
  • Day 1
Then the man with the bright red eyes & long golden hair began to speak...The lore of the ocean. all my days have I watched it & listened to it, & know it well. At first it told to me only the plain little tales of calm beaches & near ports, but with the years it grew more friendly & spoke of other things; of things more strange & more distant in space & time. sometimes at twilight the gray vapors of the horizon have parted to grant me glimpses of the ways beyond; & sometimes at night the deep waters of the sea have grown clear & phosphorescent, to grant me glimpses of the ways beneath. And these glimpses have been as often the ways that were & the ways that might be, as of the ways that are; for the ocean is more ancient than the mountains, & freighted with the memories & dreams of time.
  • Day 1
The Man with the bright burning eyes & golden hair paused as if to recall something......Out of the south it was that the White Ship used to come when the moon was full & high in the heavens. Out of the south it would glide very smoothly & silently over the sea. One night I espied upon the deck a man, bearded & robed, & he seemed to beckon me to embark for far unknown shores. Very brightly did the moon shine on the night I answered the call, & I walked out over the waters to the White Ship on a bridge of moonbeams. The hours were filled with soft songs of the oarsmen as we glided away into a mysterious south, golden with the glow of that full, mellow moon. And when the day dawned, rosy effulgent, I beheld the green shore of far lands, bright & beautiful, & to me unknown. As we drew nearer the shore the bearded man told me of that land, the land of Erathia, where dwell all the dreams & thoughts of beauty that come to men once & then are forgotten.
  • day 2
So it was that Hope, Aspirations & the Inovator sent forth their dreams to paint the land of Erathia. And everywhere their thoughts went the land took shape in the form of their dreams. But allways they strove with an unseen darkness that did battle & try to twist their creations to an evil purpose. They were very troubled & decided to split up to see if they could locate the source from which this evil eminated. The Inovator said I shall travel the river that lies to the west for I feel my path lies that way. Then Hope said I shall travel the river that lies to the east for I since my destiny lies that way. Aspirations said I shall stay & rebuild the castle of Imagination; for if Imagination should fall then shall the whole land be in great peril.
  • Background
The bearded man appeared again & began to speak.... I do not recall distinctly when it began, but it was months ago. The general tension was horrible. to a season of political & social upheaval was added a strange & brooding apprehension of hideous physical danger; a danger widespread & all-embracing, such a danger as may be imagined only in the most terrible phantasms of the night. I recall that people went about with pale & worried faces, & whispered warnings & prophecies which no one dared consciously repeat or acknowledge to themsevles, that they had heard.
  • Background 2
A sense of monstrous guilt was upon the land, & out of the abysses between the stars swept chill currents that made men shiver in the dark & lonely places. It was then that the Dream Reaper came out of the Nameless City. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of old native blood & looked like a Pharaoh. And where he went, sleep vanished, for the small hours were rent with the screams of nightmares.
  • Background 3
The Necromancers were the first to submit to the will of the Dream Reaper & worship him. And in return he taught them ancient magics. He taught them how to bring emotions & nightmares to life. So it was that Terror, Dread, Despair, Illusion, Ill Omen, & Abomination were born into physical form & like puppets controled by some demented puppeteer go about doing their masters bidding.
  • Day 10
The Dream Reaper casts his visions of darkness from behind the walls of his castle, The Nameless City in the Land of Nightmares. He will not venture far from his castle, for he has put the strongest part of his essence into it. You must seek this Nameless City out & break its very foundation down to rubble.
  • Day 21
Then the bearded man appeared before all three, handing each of them a cloth sack that contained small round spheres, & said unto them, these are some of the dreams that were stolen by the Dream Reaper. They were recovered by The Visionary & the Optomist who went out before you. But they return no more. I fear they have been overtaken by the Illusions of the Dream Reaper. Take these dreams & cast them in fertile land so that they do not die & wither.
  • Day 35
The Inovator sent his dreams forth. He invisoned a City of a Thousand Wonders, wherein reside all those mystreies that man has striven in vain to fathom. The city was greater than any city he had known or dreamed of before. Into the sky the spires of its temples reached, so that no man might behold their peaks.
  • Day 35
Into City of a Thousand Wonders the Dream Reaper sent forth his dark thoughts also. And it became a place of demons & mad things that are no longer men & the streets became filled with the unburied bones of them who have looked upon its shores.
  • Day 55
Hope sent forth her dreams & created a pleasant coast gay with the blossoms of every hue, where as far as the eye could see basked lovely groves & radiant arbors beneath a meridian sun. From bowers beyond view came bursts of song & snatches of lyric harmony, interspersed with faint laughter.
  • Day 55
Then the Dream Reaper sent forth his thoughts & there burst the most appalling & demonic succession of cries that any have heard. Not more unutterable could have been the chaos of hellish sound if the pit itself had opened to release the agony of the damned, for in one inconceivable cacophony was centered all the supernal terror & unnatural despair of animate nature. Human it could not have been--it is not in man to make such sounds.
  • day 75
Then Aspirations sent forth his dreams. And there was forests of aloe & sandlewood fragrant groves of camorin, & among the trees fluttered gay birds sweet with song. On the flowery mountains stood temples of pink marble. In their courtyards cool fountains of silver. In the gardens were strange orchids & perfumed lakes whose beds were of coral & amber.
  • day 75
Then came the thoughts of the Dream Reaper & there was hooded forms amidst ruins, & yellow evil faces peering from behind fallen monuments. The world was battling against blackness; against the waves of destruction from ultimate space; whirling, churning, struggling around the dimming, cooling sun. And leagues below the world could be heard the ghastly cursing & snarling of strange-tongued fiends, hideous voices with the pent up viciousness of desolate eternities.
  • day 100
The Inovator dreamed of the twilight, the moon & soft songs, & the window where he was rocked to sleep. and through the window was the street where the golden lights came, & where the shadows danced on houses of marble. He remembered the square of moonlight on the floor, that was not like any other light, & the visions that danced on the moonbeams when his mother sang to him. He felt enveloped in a peace & happiness more profound than any he had in life imagined..... The Dream Reaper was not happy!!!!
  • Day 101
From the abyss of the Dream Reaper's mind came forth a horrid nightmare to all the inhabitants of Erathia. It was a vision of Erathia slowly turning, ever turning, with the angry & tempestuous seas gnawing at wild desolate shores & dashing foam against the tottering towers of deserted cities. And under a gashtly moon there gleamed sights that they could not describe, sights they could never forget; deserts of corpselike clay & jungles of ruin & decadence where once stretched the populous plains & villages of native lands.
  • Day 101
Round the northern pole steamed a morass of noisome growths & miasmal vapors, hissing before the onslaught of the ever-mounting waves that curled & fretted from the shuddering deep. The black ocean foamed & gnawed, eating away Erathia on either side as the rift in the center widened & widened. There was now no land left but the desert, & still the fuming ocean ate & ate. Until the ocean ate the last of the land & poured into a smoking gulf, thereby giving up all it had ever conquered.
  • Day 101
A cloud of steam covered the entire surface from sight, all the firmament shrieked at a sudden agony of mad reverberations. In one delirious flash & burst it happened; deafening holocaust of fire, smoke, & thunder that dissolved the wan moon as it sped outward to the void. and when the smoke cleared away, & they sought to look upon Erathia, they beheld against the background of cold, humorous stars only the dying sun & the pale mournful planets searching for their sister.

    • Сообщение: I am the Visionary. I had dreams of a land full of wonder & beauty. Then came the Dream Reaper. He twisted my thoughts till all I could imagine were the horrors that go bump in the night. I have seen the nameless city where his shadow covets all that was free. There is no legend so old as to give it a name, or recall that it was ever alive; but it is told of in whispers around campfires & muttered about by grandams in the tents of sheiks so that all the tribes shun it without wholly knowing why. I alone have seen it, & that is why no other face bears such hideous lines of fear as mine; why no other man shivers so horribly when the night wind rattles the windows. It lies just ahead.....This much the Visionay boldy told, yet without a hint of what came after. Perhaps he did not know, or perhaps he knew & did not dare say.

    • Сообщение: As you start to enter the gate a terrific force of icy wind almost quenches your torch. It poured madly out of the dark door, signing uncannily as it ruffled the snow & spread among weird ruins. Soon it grew fainter & the snow grew more & more still, till finally all was at rest again; but a presence seemed stalking among the spectral stones. I glanced at the moon it seemed to quiver as though mirrored in unquiet waters. I was more afraid than I could explain. I felt myself on the edge of the world, peering over the rim into a fathomless chaos of eternal night.

    • Сообщение: Upon the ground they found yellowed papyrus filled with the thoughts of dream-sages who dwelt of old here, & who were too wise ever to be born in the waking world. Therein were written many things concerning the world of dreams, & among them was lore of a golden valley & a sacred groove with temples, & a high wall pierced by a little bronze gate. The three strangers saw it described the very scene where they now stood. Some of the dream-sages wrote gorgeously of the wonders beyond the gate, but others told of horror & disappointment. They knew not which to believe, yet longed more & more to cross for ever into the unknown land; for doubt & secrecy are the lure of lures, & no new horror can be more terrible than the daily torture of the commonplace. So it was that the three strangers took the final steps out of reality & into the waking world of dreams

    • Сообщение: The bearded man dressed in robes lifted his palm in a sign of greeting & his eyes told them the answers to their questions....Your dreams have led you here. Out of the tears of innocence you have found what the cares of the world has cast aside. You have come to the heart of imagination where the blood of hope flows freely. But beware, you are not alone. There is one who seeks to control the land & cast a shadow over all the dreams till they turn into nightmares that cause grown men to cower in the night. Allready he has stolen the dreams of once friendly neighbors. So that they battle among themselves & are ill prepared for the onslaught of darkness that swiftly approaches. It will not be long before his minions rise up from the tombs of despair & ride upon the tide of terror till all fly the pink flag of nothingness. Beware the coming of THE DREAM REAPER.

    • Сообщение: Suddenly they became aware of the bearded man & he began to speak..... there are not many persons who know what wonders are opened to them in the stories & visions of their youth; for when as children we listen & think but half formed thoughts, & when as men we try to remember, we are dulled & prosaic with the posin of life. But some of us awake in the night with strange phantasms of enchanted hills & gardens, of fountains that sing in sun, of golden cliffs overhanging murmuring seas, of plains that stretch down to sleeping cities of bronze & stone, & of shadowy companies of heros that ride caparisoned white horses along the edges of thick forests; & then we know that we have looked back through the ivory gates into that world of wonder which was ours before we were wise & unhappy.

Yet I hesitated only for a moment before advancing through the portal. It is only in the terrible phantasms of drugs or delirium that any other man can have such a descent as mine. The narrow passage led infinitely down like some hideous haunted well, towards unknown depts.

He showed me a world overtaken by blackness; against the waves of destruction from ultimate space; whirling, churning, struggling around the dimming, cooling sun. I heard reverberations of a disquieting wail as my companions vanished into the darkness. As if beckoned by those who had gone before, I half-floated between the titanic snowdrifts, quivering & afraid into the sightless vortex of the unimaginable, past ghastly midnights of rotting creation, corpses of dead worlds with sores that were cities, charnel winds that brush the pallid stars & flicker low. Filled with this vision of terror I hide myself away in this self imposed prison, against the onslaught of nightmares that the Dream Reaper sent to obliterate me. The gate lies just ahead.

Fear spoke from the age-worn stones of this hoary survivor of the deluge, this great-grandfather of the eldest pyramid; & a viewless aura repelled me & bade me retreat from antique & sinister secrets that no man should see. There before me was the gate to the Nameless City. The sorce of all the nightmares that had come to Erathia.
