    Emissaries from King Pendrag inform you that you are to journey to Pendrag Island to answer charges regarding the disappearance of the Prime Minister. (While this discussion is going on, an aid whispers in your ear that your sisters are also receiving this same invitation... apparently the King doesn't have a clue, or something else is going on.) You decide to go to Pendrag Lair, but to preserve your options, you assemble a strong escort force. You know your sisters will do the same...

    While this conference is going on, word comes of a series of earthquakes that has shaken the far reaches of your land. You dismiss the emissaries quickly, concentrating on the news. Initial information from refugees is patchy, but put together shows that masses of creatures never seen before are appearing, and there has been fighting. You have lost contact with your escort force.

    Resources to kick start the bad guys. For whatever reason they don't seem to get going as well as the good guys even though they've got better starting forces and about the same mine count...
  • day 2
    The earthquakes have subsided. Contact with most cities and outposts has been lost. There have been reports of strange creatures near the capitol. The situation is menacing... and it looks like it will be a while before you can attend to the King or to your sisters. You send out scouts.

    Scouts are back, and the news is bad. All but two of our ramparts have been destroyed by invaders, and our cities are overrun by monsters. The monsters have taken much and left little.

    Scouts have found the point of entry for the subterranean hordes. A series of great fissures have opened in the north. There is evidence even now of continued alien activity around the fissures. There are also reports now of renewed earthquakes.

    Scouts have noted increased local earthquake activity around the fissures... it looks like they are beginning to close! The invading hordes are taking their booty through the fissures more quickly now, and are getting careless. Here and there artifacts and chests looted from the cities are being dropped by the invaders!

    The news is astonishing! The fissures have closed. The invading legions have left only token forces in most places. Apparently they decided to leave rather than to try to hold the conquered areas with no base of supply. You set about your business of rebuilding grimly; the fissures could reopen at any time.

    Some additional scouts thought to have been lost return with startling news. The lands of both of your sisters suffered similar catastrophic events... apparently the scope of the earthquakes was vast indeed. This is good news of a sort; at least now you know that your sisters cannot reach Pendrag Lair any more quickly than you can. It is also suspicious... how is it possible for all three sisters have the same earthquake problems???

    A vein of gold we found near the fissures is yielding well. It is not clear how long it will last, but it is rich indeed, and welcome.
  • day 7
    The fissures have been located and marked. Some special materials and artifacts did not go with the invaders just as the fissures closed, and are still near the fissures. Scouts are unable to deal with monsters that guard this leftover booty. We will need to look into this soon, as there is little left in the land to provision an army.

    A few isolated seers are reporting that some stolen treasures the hordes could not carry have been stockpiled. Underworld forces have been left to guard these treasures, possibly on the chance that the fissures might reopen as quickly as they closed. You should contact the seers for more on this...

    More reports from the seers... the invaders left strange dragons guarding the shipyard. You will need the shipyard when the time comes to find out what happened at Pendrag Lair, since scouts have reported that the mage guilds which supplied the air travel magic have been destroyed.

You are about to chalk this rumor up to hope, but then think the better, and file the item away. You direct your armies to train in air magic, just in case...

    An unconfirmed report today... one scout has straggled in with a rumor that during the turmoil in your sister's lands a group of monks escaped with the air travel magic that your sisters had, but no one knows where they went. You never had much use for air travel magic, so you are about to ignore the information, but then think the better, and file the item away. You direct your armies to train in air magic, just in case...

    The majority of the mines near the mountain ranges have been shut down by the retreating hordes. A rag-tag band of monsters are guarding them. Not too difficult to deal with, but it takes time, and your sisters aren't sitting still... Notwithstanding that, an initial shipment of resources arrived today!
  • day 12
    Word comes that the escaping monks were members of Abbey Grimsby, an eccentric religious outpost established years past in a cave on Pendrag Island. The monks have sealed the cave to avoid the wrath of King Pendrag. Outraged, the King has blocked access to the seal with a powerful garrison. It is likely that the King knows of the air magic, and will do anything to get it. You wonder at the King's behavior with respect to the monks... what is going on?
  • day 13
    The politics on Pendrag Island are getting pretty. The monks have sealed access to and egress from the island, apparently hoping that one of you will win out over the others and come to their aid. The seals are established with three gates, the keys for which are said to have been scattered among the sister's realms by secret couriers. So, it looks as if the King is unable to leave Pendrag Island, or enter the monks cave, and the monks cannot leave their cave. This works for you, but for how long?

    We are mining the gold vein on a regular basis. So far, so good!
  • day 14
    At last, a day to rest and contemplate the issue of the trip to Pendrag Lair and your sisters. Clearly there could be a problem if you send a strong force against one sister, and the other shows up at your shipyard a little later with the same intentions. Two medium armies might do (one at home and one on the road), but it is a terrible risk. A dim memory of a possible solution to this comes to mind... you ask your court magician about the legend of the power of portal. He says that the legend has never amounted to much, but perhaps the monks at Grimsby Abbey could be contacted...

    The court magician says that Grimsby monks can provide the portal power, but that they have insisted that all sisters have it or none; that is their offer. Wryly you accept the offer, figuring anything your sisters can do, you can do better. The monks will send a courier with the technique of portal to instruct your mage guild. You hurriedly dig up the old earth magic books to do some long overdue reading...

    The monks from Grimsby Abbey have given their able assistance in preparation of the mage guild for the power of portal. You nod your approval, and send them on their way. Two of the monks are hanging around the shipyard before they leave; they love to talk about this sort of thing...
  • day 17
    Word today from spies at Pendrag Lair... not good. The fighters in the King's armies number in the thousands. When we enter the island, we'd better be ready, because once the seals are broken the King can leave the island.
