: When the Teleri set off on their journey west and most of them had reached Beleriand, a tragedy befell them. Their king, Elwл, dissappeared and although some continued, others stayed behind, searching for their lost king.

Finally he came forth from the Nan Elmoth with his spouse, Melian the Maia, and the elves were glad and decided to dwell there with him, calling their country Eglador; Elwл received the name Thingol and his elves were called the Sindar, grey-elves.

They received the aid of the Naugrim, the dwarves, who delved vast caves for Thingol and adorned them richly, making their beaty great and renowned. These caverns became the capital of Eglador, and was called Menegroth, The Thousand Caves.

Thingol also had the dwarves forge for him weapons and armor. Thus, when the orcs began to attack his realm, his soldiers drove them off and caused them great losses.

But because the western army of orcs had achieved victory, Thingol was worried, and his wife Melian then wove a great spell around Eglador,

The Girdle of Melian, which prevented any evil creatures from entering, and the realm was now called Doriath, The Guarded Realm.

The grey-elves now had peace for many years, until evil struck them from within.
asdf

. For Thingol had received a Silmaril, obtained by Beren in a quest to earn the hand of Luthien, Thingol's daughter. He had his dwarven smiths put it into the Nauglamir, The Necklace of the Dwarves.

But the dwarves secretly planned to take the jewel for themselves, and Thingol bade them leave without payment after realizing this.
asdf

Enraged, the dwarves slew the King, and were slain themselves. Menegroth had no interest for Melian without Thingol, and she left Doriath, removing her protecting magic also from the realm.

This allowed for a dwarven army to enter unhindered Menegroth, and they sacked it, slaying many elves. But when they attempted to return to Nogrod, they were slain themselves, by the elves of Ossiriand, ents and also Beren and his son Dior.

The latter went to Menegroth, and since he was the grandson of Thingol, the Sindar were glad to receive him, and they took him as their new king.
asdf

But he was not to rule long; for when his parents died, a messenger arrived with the Silmaril. He wore it around his neck, and the news of this reached the sons of Fлanor.
asdf

They attacked Menegroth, and though the resistance was great, Dior was slain, and but the Silmaril escaped with his daughter Elwing.
asdf

After this second sack of Menegroth, the last inhabitants abandoned it, fleeing to the mouths of Sirion, and Menegroth's halls lay empty until they too sunk with the rest of Beleriand.
