    {IMPORTANT:} This version is for first-time players of the map. If either player has played this map before, you should instead play the version titled {Neighbors-Again}.     • Сообщение: {Journal Entry 1 - Month 1, Week 1, Day 1 in the year of the Moontide} This year began strangely, just as the previous one ended so oddly with our move. I may never know what possessed my father to build this castle beside those rotting old zombies and inhuman bloodsuckers, but for now at least, this is our home. Alas, my father's mind is surely going--all day long he sits and stares at the wall, making not a sound. Then, for no reason at all, he begins to laugh. It's not a normal laugh either, but a weird, crazy, maniacal laugh that fills me with dread. {----------------------------------------------------[more]----------------------------------------------------} I feel badly for the old man, for he has always shown us much kindness. But now that his mind has gone, I am the one in charge. What's more, the Moonsnake Worshippers of Tali have set me a task (as crazy as that may sound). They claim that the opposing karmic force of our two castles so close together is creating a dangerous instability. If I can locate an ancient relic known as The Grail before the evil-smelly-yucky-necros next door, they will proclaim me the winner of their 'game' and will send a giant serpent to remove the mindless beasties forever from my sight. {----------------------------------------------------[more]----------------------------------------------------} These Moonsnake Worshippers are rather strange, but it sounds like an all right deal I suppose--not that they gave me any choice in the matter. At least it's probably easier than storming the Necromancer's castle by force. The downside is that the Moonsnake Worshippers have made the same deal with the Necromancers. If the Necros find the Grail first, it's inside-of-giant-serpent time for us. Although I'm a little worried, I know that Good WILL triumph over Evil!

She is travelling with her pegasi army and should arrive in a few weeks time. It seems Amara wishes to stay and rest at my father's castle before continuing her travels to the east. She is known to be an understanding woman, and it's my hope that when I explain my quest, she will lend me some of her troops. Of course, I shall need to spruce up the barracks first to provide them a decent place to stay and I must remember to put aside some gold to pay their wages--even pegasi riders need to eat.

This morning some kids discovered the remains of about a dozen half-rotten zombies floating in (what had been) our nice clean sparkly river--the one we've been using for our drinking water (I feel a little sick now). It's bad enough finding dead bodies, or rather, dead UNdead bodies (is that an oxymoron I wonder?), but the things were wearing clothing that had at least three kinds of mold growing on them, and maggots were swarming across them like it was another all-you-can-eat night at Kaverna Tavern. I think we're going to have to move faster with this quest--the sooner we can remove these foul beasts, the better!

The plants in the castle have begun dying, while much of the vegetation outside is drying up. Despite adequate rain and watering, many of our crops and fruit trees are dying too. I have the druids working on counter spells to revitalize the plants--I just hope it's not too late to save the cherry trees. Some days I really HATE my neighbors!

It worries me that it's so hard to see through the blinding smoke--I think I may have to station several heroes on permanent patrol duty so that we don't get ambushed!

And what did we see silhouetted against the full moon? Bats! Thousands of them, all flapping their little leathery wings and making skree skree sounds. If they had stayed in the sky and away from us, I wouldn't have minded, but they didn't. They dived at us, swooping down en masse! Their sharp teeth and evil beady eyes gleamed in the torchlight as they descended upon us. Luckily, one of our more talented druids happened to be standing by her tower window and quickly scorched them with a magical ball of fire, driving them off into the night. It was a close call though, and Mother was visibly shaken. Then all through the night, I heard the beating of wings accompanied by cursing in a language I did not comprehend. Maybe I am mistaken about the voices, but I'm sure these were not sounds made by ordinary bats--perhaps vampires with singed eyebrows? I covered my head with my pillow and fell into a restless sleep.

The death, the destruction, the evil--that I can understand, in a strange and twisted way. But I truly hate my undead neighbors, and all that they stand for. Still, they are what they are, and in some small way I can accept that (though I intend to see to it that every last one of them perishes). But this..this makes my stomach churn and brings tears to my eyes. If ever I believed that ordinary horse manure smelled bad, this is a thousand million times worse! It makes the centaur droppings seem like apple pie. Never would I have thought that the dark knights' horses could produce something so hideously foul! If anything is grounds for purging the undead from this land, it is surely this!

It saddens me when I see him losing his grip on reality so fast, but Mother and I do our best to ease his anguish. I really think he would have tried it too if we hadn't restrained him and tied him to the bedposts. Poor Father.

It made me shiver with fear and loathing. What will become of us if the Necromancers are not defeated? I must not think this way or I shall fall into a dark depression. I must fight back. What with their silly little elves, snarky centaurs and tone-deaf dwarves ('hi-ho hi-ho, it's off to smirk we go'), it seems there's never a moments peace. If they weren't so tough, I would drag them all in by their long ears and turn them into something useful--like skeletal doormats. Or maybe just splinter them and use them for toothpicks. Anyway, the Moonsnake Worshippers of Tali appeared the other day with a proposition. They claim that the opposing karmic force of our two castles so close together is creating a dangerous instability. So they've set up a little game of sorts--a quest to find The Grail, with the result that the loser is evicted permanently (or rather, dissolved in the intestines of a giant Moonsnake). Naturally, we'll be the first to find The Grail, for the living have never been a match for the undead. Ah, the promise of peace--and death. What a wonderful thought...

It's not easy to get just the right gloomy ambience and sense of barren desolation (with just a touch of ghostly doom thrown in), but now it's being spoiled by those good-for-nothing neighbors. They plant these revolting colourful flowers (have they no taste?) and then let the seeds blow across the border where they take root and start to grow on MY land. Naturally, I command my skeletons to stomp them into the dirt as soon as I see them, but it's the principal of the thing! If they're going to have yucky flowers, they could at least weight them down with rocks so the seeds won't spread. But what can I expect? Livies just don't know the meaning of the word 'respect'.

Yesterday, I had the most unpleasant experience of enjoying a light peasant snack for lunch when my ears were assaulted by a sickening elf song. It made my stomach churn and ruined the entire meal. I sometimes wonder what sick-minded god created these loathsome creatures with their pointy little ears, disgusting grins and gut-wrenching singsong voices. They don't even make good skeletons because their bones are too brittle--but they do scream rather nicely when the transformer dissolves their flesh--that part I'll always enjoy.

Yes, those were the nights--when undead armies inspired fear and terror, and powerful kaniggits ran screaming at the sight of blood (usually theirs), leaving their bodies to nourish our brethren. Fangs for the memories, Lord Longtooth. As promised, the noble Longtooth left me some of his troops, and I prepared the finest rooms in my estate for them to stay at. He also left me a gift of a sack of gold that he got as a prize with his last happy meal (so to speak).

Luckily, my skeletons are more intelligent than those brain-dead excuses for humanoids--they know how to side step the odd arrow that chances to fly in their direction. The sooner I rid the land of these pathetic creatures, the better the world will be.

As the rumbling grew louder, the day began to vanish and the glorious night returned to my castle. Arising, I discovered an enormous building where none had been before. From its top billowed forth a cloud of dark smoke that obscured the land around from prying eyes. Of course, my army and I could still see perfectly. I'm still not sure where this structure came from or even what it is, but I must admit that I like it--a lot!

No sooner had I fallen asleep but I was jarred awake by loud hammering and the sickly singing of dwarves! Those stumpy midgets couldn't carry a tune if their life depended on it. The really sickening thing is that it takes at least TWO of them to make one decent skeleton. By the dripping fangs of my ancestors, I pledge to destroy my neighbors!

If I don't have enough trouble trying to keep this place clean with zombie bits dropping off every time you look at them sideways, now I have to contend with scraping centaur and unicorn droppings off the skeletons' feet to keep them from slipping when they march. A few bones and skulls scattered around give the castle a nice homey quality, but who needs this icky filth? It's a good thing most of the troops don't have a sense of smell anymore.

And then, oh how pleasant the smell of dendroid woodsmoke will be...

Every time I got comfortable in my coffin, whinnying and the staccato clip clop of many hooves awoke me. When I finally gave up the possibility of getting any rest, I arose and climbed the east tower to see what stupid activity my wretched neighbors were engaged in this time. It looked a little like a military parade--rows and rows of four-footed beasts all lined up and marching. For some odd reason, the sight of their battle maneuvers worried me. I know I must not underestimate their strength (even though they are clearly inferior beings) and must be duly prepared to do battle.

The cool night air helps to preserve the zombies and keeps the liches from complaining too much. But now it's being ruined by my oh-so-wonderful neighbors (what else is new!). They've started training dragons--green and gold--which seem to delight in feeding on small bats at night and frying clouds of insects. And now the heat of their flames (and that hot stinky gas they expel after meals) is turning the place into a bloody sauna! If I weren't so angry at the rise in temperature they're causing, I would probably be worried about the strength of their dragon troops--not that a few of my ghost dragons couldn't eat them for lunch. And speaking of lunch, I feel a peasant-craving coming on.
