    You know who I think are the richest in Breath province? Those sneaky little dwarves. I bet they have gold mines hidden underground from here to central Tatalia! Heh, they probably payed off the Baron so he'd leave them alone!

    Now where could the entrance to the dwarven caves be?
  • a hero: Lizard Hunter
    That lizard hunter is one tough bounty hunter. And he just laughs at those who flee into the swamp.
  • Monk 1: & Angels won't serve
    Sometimes humans are encountered in the tavern. You hear one saying, The aggressive and cruel behavior of Barron Kilgore and his men has disturbed the monks. His troops have given up praying for angels to come to their aid, also!
  • Monk 3: Brother Ingham
    Yep, that Brother Ingham didn't like what he saw when he came to visit the monastery last month. Lord Kilgore didn't like that he might tell others... (Everyone in the bar goes silent at the mention of this.)

    Though monks have avoided serving Barron Killgore, they do have several monastaries in the area.

    Little creatures.. can't stand 'em. I hear there are some that wizards keep as slaves. Yea, a slave race. Well that's what I heard. They even have a ball and chain clamped to their legs!
  • Wizard 1: Gremlin
    Some say the wizards trespassing underground went too far. The little peoples know how to make statues move; they now send the statues to attack the wizards.

    Have you heard the tale of the Isle of Mothra? It mysteriously appears sometimes, to test heros. If they survive, they recieve its gift.

    Ever seen a dwarf? I hear they are little men who live underground. Like mining, I hear.

    (You hear talk about a race of small man-like creatures, also living underground, though different from dwarves.) Well, if I were forced to keep an iron ball chained to my leg all my life, I think I'd revolt too! (what?)
  • Wizard 2: Knights
    People of the jungle are not the only ones the knights hate. They can't seem to get along with the mountaintop wizards, either.
  • Hydra: army
    There is a new hydra army being trained. The defiant rebels near the razed town of Breath might know something about it.

    The once proud capital of Breath stood over the center of this land. It remained a symbol of the sovereignty of the peoples here, and many of its citizens became rebels after the purging began. Sadly, noone lives there anymore.The citizens were massacred, and the city was burned around them.

    Tatalia is at war with Erathia! Rulers of the {Breath} province hoped to escape notice from both nations. But now it has been invaded sucessfully by Erathian General Killgore. Killgore has proven a brutal dictator. Out of the terror of her reign...

    ... arise three unlikely allies: renegade gnoll Drakon II, innexperienced witch Oceana, and mercenary overlord Stephanie. Fortunately, Killgore is reorganizing his army at the moment. They have some time to make plans... {Gageteer's Gnolls v1.3} by {David Page} AKA {Gageteer}

    These are dark times for your homeland. Invaders have crushed the military. Now village leaders were killed. You are part of a desperate rebellion, and can only watch as your last allies ({Barefang} and {Angrienne}) fall. Also... you thought {Gnoll Town} was still safe, but you were wrong..

    There went the funds you had stored there! You shudder to think what else could go wrong as a scout from the north frantically emerges from the jungle. A witch! A witch was seen bearing the mark of 'The Chosen'! This could be good news, you think.
  • D (from the council)
    The scout has a companion.. one from the council. The young lizard hands you a scroll: Your perserverance has given us hope. We have dispatched our most promising wicken to aid you. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do for Barefang or Angrienne.
  • D
    We have sent a mercenary who strikes across distance, named Stephanie. And we know you are in need of supplies. Go north to meet a relief caravan we have sent you.
  • Oceanna (loose resources)
    You had to sneak into this region, and all you could carry was gold.

    You read the scroll given you by Esmeralda of the Council of Witches. It says: Oceanna.. you are one of our finest new witches, and have earned the rank Chosen disciple. You are here to help the locals repulse Erathian barbarians.
  • Oc: ally Drakon II
    All of the beastmasters have fallen with the exception of Drakon II. We sent a supply caravan to help him, but have since lost contact with it. Before attacking the enemy, we want you to link up with him and help in any way you can.
  • Oc: (recieve gold)
    The region you are in is poor, but there are many willing to help you. You may also have to retreat from battles, and that can get expensive. We are sending you some gold reserves. This will be all we can send for some time.
  • Stephanie (loose money and resources)
    You are new to this mercenary business, and have been unable to build your funds yet.
  • S
    The {witches council} of this area hired you to help repulse the invaders. (They'd better let you have your reward, you think.) You will work with {Oceana}, an emmisarry they have sent. She is one of the Chosen (-whatever that means).
  • S: Liberate Castigare
    You knew the witches were short on money, so you suggested they give you something other than gold. Allow me to rule {Castigare} once this is over, you pronounced. They were only too eager to aggree. Castigare is your home, you realize, and who better to rule it than yourself?

    The wiches replied, What, you want that place? THAT place? O.K., it's a deal! The ruler of your home town had good relations with the witch-led territory on the surface, but he also made them uncomfortable. They had to look the the other way when rumors surfaced about his experiments..
  • Oc: Reminder to get moving
    You are scrying in the morning, and recieve a message from the remote witches council. You must remain on the move, Oceanna. Your area is safer because there are no great beasts in the area, and very little money. Eventually they will come for you.

    A young gnoll approaches. You want to know how to get more of these, yes? The child runs to the bushes, and brings out a lizard warrior's breastplate. My grandfather wishes your audience. He is in {Marrowville villiage}. With that the little one drops the plate and darts out of site.

    As per your aggreement, the witches send an early payment.
  • D&S: Hazel, witch (offers to teach wisdom)
    Last night a raven landed next to you as you were falling asleep. Perhaps you were dreaming, but it seemed to say I am a messenger from Witch Hazel. She wants to help you , but is trapped by goblin bandits. If you can route them, she will take the time to teach you higher spellcraft.

    Next you see Hazel. Unlike most of my sisters, I have chosen to live in a very dry area. Goblins bandits are quite common. So are the great birds which have learned to scavage fallen soldiers. I am located East from the ice peaks, which are not far from you. It may require a journey to reach me.
  • D (Hill fort- Snarltooth)
    Your old mentor Snarltooth addresses you after you have reviewed the troops this morning. Those gnolls are green! Wouldn't you like to see them trained up to marauder status? The Erathians have a secret outpost near here - you just have to find it.
  • Oc: Can't build mage #3
    A messenger boy from the villiage elder catches up to you. Milady! Grandpa says he is sorry, but we cannot locate any more ore to complete the witch hut! He hopes that you can find some, so that the work can be completed!

    This morning you went to look over Mothra before rousing the beast. Every day, several of your men must look to her wounds.. they are not healing well, with all this movement. She cannot regain full health until you find better help. Perhaps that place Snarltooth mentioned...

    Facility, eh? Well, they Erathians certainly have all the supplies. When a big battle comes along, Mothra shall surely fall if she still is in this weakened state. The secret facility must be found!
  • Oc: Basilisks = dragons
    You woke up this morning missing the old, innocent days as an acolyte. You see the slaughter of swamp creatures which your enemies feared might aid you. Several orphaned basilisks were found this morning. The surviving, old beastmasters will be hard pressed to train them as they get older..
  • Oc: basilisk (cont'd)
    If they were alive, you might have the babies sent to rock basilisks to be reared... ... wait..., is it possible? Perhaps the Erathians don't know that this area has basilisks that prefer dry terrain....
  • D (dragons)
    As a charismatic leader of the gnolls, you always welcome volunteers, and know they will fight bravely for you. Secretly, though, you worry about shortages of beasts.. a vital strength in any Tatalian campaign. Sitting under a tree with Stonehide, you murmur about missing the Basilisks..

    I'd even welcome those extra-ornery rock basilisks right now! you exclaim. What, those critters? Snarltooth says, fondly scraping his unusually long canine, Why didn't you say so? I know at least some of them were overlooked. (You look silly with your mouth wide open like that, young gnoll!)

    Oh.. you want to get some of those basilisks? (Snarltooth can act dumb sometimes, you think.) Yep, we just find ourselves a boat and sail inland a ways, due northeast.. well how was I supposed to know you wanted to go chasing them? Them are feisty critters, those dragons! They'll keep ya busy.

    ..and once our enemy sees that you have found and tamed some, it's a good bet they will figure out where the lairs are. Then you will find yourself with new territory to defend. Mabey they will have some traitors willing to tame the dragons for their own use...
  • S: old rival
    Staying in a neutral tavern for the night, you notice an old aquiantance from home. He is talking with several friends he made on the surface, since having to flee. He is soliciting bets on the winner of a future battle between an overlord and a warlock. This arrouses your interest...

    You approach the table. Who ARE the two you speak of? I have not seen anyone in a month! He looks a bit nervous for a minute, then says Well.. one of them would be... you! He throws up the table suddenly, scattering food and drink everywhere, and vanishes into the night.
  • D (drinking party)
    Yesterday your band discovered a cache of ale the invaders had overlooked, and you all sat down for a healthy dose of it. You were happy to drink with your comrades.
  • D (Raven tells of treasure guarded by demons)
    Once again a raven lights next to where you sleep, and you gaze into its penetrating eyes... Drakon.. demons wish to invade our lands. There is an army of them down below, and they are holding items of considerable magical potency, hidden in a large cavern, which is itself hidden.
  • O: Warning of computer attack soon!
    Last night you had a dream. You were an eagle, soaring high above grasslands and jungles. The jungles are being cleared to make way for grass. Stone castles are going up, and a vast human army is gathering.. some on foot, some on horse, some riding griffins. They begin their move.
  • O: (cont-a)
    The land changes to steppes. There are few signs of civilization. You are looking down on a witch hut, with a single figure standing outside it. Though far away, you sense she is looking at you. Oddly, you sense what she thinks. You are not dreaming. you think she says. They are coming for you..
  • O: (cont-b)
    ... coming for you very soon. A great hand tries to grasp you. And like the water, you slip through its fingers. You wake up, remembering the dream. The others.. Drakon, Stephanie.. must have had the dream also.. but they would not remember it, or not know what to make of it.
  • O: (cont-c -Warn D & S)
    You know what must be done. Serpent fly couriers are dispatched to your allies, with the message: We are about to be attacked. We must evade them. You hope that they will trust your intuitions. It may be their only chance.
  • S: Recieve warning from Oceana
    A serpent fly approaches your army while on the march. Guessing it to be a courier, you quickly take the message and allow it to depart. A great hand is about to reach for us... we must evade it's grasp! Those witches, you think. Always speaking with pictures.

    However, you are still not only working with them, but for them as well. There is little choice but to heed this warning.. if you can be sure what it means.

    Witches have uncanny abilities to see things others cannot, you think; nevertheless, you consider contacting Oceanna to ask her to be a bit more specific.
  • D: Reminder to hold Gnolltown!
    Your chief of recruitments says to you, The recruiters have a horde of youngbloods, eager to fight the invaders. But they put their trust only in you, and will arrive at Gnoll Town in a few days. We must try to hold that city!
  • S (pep talk from Drakon)
    You recieve a message from Drakon, who you thought was defeated. Greetings, my overlord ally. Yes, they destroyed my hydra Mothra, but I am stilll alive and running. Don't give up! Though their cavalry hoards are limitless... You fold the note up and put it away. Save it for the gnolls...
  • O (pep talk from Drakon)
    You recieve a message from Drakon, who you thought was defeated. They destroyed Mothra, and many gnolls have fallen. Can I raise a great army and surprise them? If not, I will attempt to distract them while you gain magical strength. We must never give up!
  • O (cont'd)
    Drakon's talking about his hydra again, you think. The many losses have made him sad. He now sometimes seems to be talking to it, as though it were still alive.
  • O (c'd)
    The two had a great appreciation for each other. You remember Drakon walking next to Mothra to scratch the top of one of its heads. Few beastmasters would dare do such a thing.
