    You're asleep...

    dreaming about... ummm... some very nice things.
  • Prelude3
    When suddenly you're awakened by a determined knock on your chamber door. It's your Assistant and she has some very bad news.
  • Prelude4
    For the past two months you've been handling the affairs of the Empress while she's been away on state business. Now, word has reached the castle that the Empress has been captured and imprisoned by unknown forces.
  • Prelude5
    Word of the abduction spreads quickly, and before midday, a large crowd of citizens has pledged their support in a rescue attempt. They ask you to lead the attempt... with a vengeance.
  • Muster1
    For the past few days, you've taken steps to secure the resources and troops needed for the rescue campaign. Just this morning, after a short debate (combined with a little blackmail), you were able to convince a local Baron to kick-in some additional tribute:

    Meanwhile, your Assistant has been busy dispatching select emissaries (read spies) to neighboring lands. It shouldn't be long before the details of the Empress' abduction become clear...
  • Week Past1
    A week has past since news of the Empress' abduction reached the castle. Troops have been sent out to collect resources, secure your borders, and muster additional volunteers.
  • Week Past2
    Communiques have also been coming in from your emissaries. These reports have been less than settling. You ask your Assistant to coordinate the intelligence, assess its validity, and provide you with regular updates.

    You've been fairly successful in securing the resources in the immediate area, but it's becoming quite obvious that your rescue campaign is not assured - nor will it be swift.

    The intelligence coming back isn't making much sense either... something about a legendary grail, rival jealousies, and neighboring empires amassing troops.
  • Emissary
    Today you've learned that one of your best emissaries was forced to flee for her life after being accused of espionage... the nerve of those bastards! Nevertheless, your emissary was able to liberate some of your neighbor's resources before her hasty departure.
  • Prepare for War
    Details are vague, but it seems that your nation isn't the only one suffering under the abduction of its leader. Rumor has it, that the rulers of several neighboring kingdoms are also missing. Furthermore, those nations suspect you as the culprit. Perhaps, it's time to prepare for war.
  • First Spy1
    It's late and you've just gone to bed, when alarmed shouts ring out. You scramble to put your robe on, dash down the hall and enter the war room to find your Assistant and several legionnaires wrestling with a dark-cloaked man.
  • First Spy2
    An hour later, the castle is calm and the body of the cloaked spy is carried away. Nothing was revealed during the interrogation, but hidden in his clothes were documents and maps clearly showing a route through your lands to an underground cave.

    You sit at your desk examining the maps and other documents aquired from the spy two days ago, when suddenly a diminutive man walks into your office. He's accompanied by your Assistant and both have satisfied smiles on their faces [relax... this is a clean script]. :)

    During the next fifteen minutes, you learn that the Empress is being held in an underground prison deep inside enemy territory. It certainly won't be easy to reach her, but you thank the emissary for the information and hand him a modest reward.
  • Quest1
    During the past week, surprising new details have been revealed. Apparently, your Empress was not on a diplomatic mission when she left several months ago - she was actually on a quest.
  • Quest2
    Based on recent intelligence, it's clear that the Empress had been secretly meeting with the leaders of the other nations to coordinate an effort to find a mysterious artifact - The Grail. Apparently, something went very, very wrong.
  • Second Spy
    Your day begins with bad news. The Captain of the Guard explains that another spy was captured last night, but before he could be interrogated, he escaped. You find this very disturbing; even more so, when you later learn that 2000 gold is missing from the treasury.
  • Secure Castle
    Since the escape of the spy three days ago, the Captain of the Guard has been completing a full assessment of the castle's security. You've seen some improvements, but still have many concerns.
  • Spy Found
    Finally, some good news... the escaped spy has been found in the nearby foothills. Or should I say his body has been found - shredded by an unknown beast. Scattered among his clothing and bones are several confidential documents and a portion of the stolen gold.
  • Grail Found
    For several days, your Assistant and her intelligence team have pored over the documents found on the dead spy. Only small portions have been deciphered, but one important fact has been gleaned... the Empress and her cohorts found The Grail prior to their capture.
  • Crowd Support
    Somehow, word has leaked to the general public that the Empress possesses The Grail... crowds now regularly gather at the castle gate to encourage your efforts to bring the Empress home and build a permanent altar for the artifact. Weekly offerings are being presented to support the campaign.
  • Continued Support
    With visions of victory... your people continue their support.
