It's a sad day for the American logging industry: sawmills have gone union, the shipper's guild has declared war over floating logs clogging the river, new age environmentalists are planting weeds, and worst of all, the axe of mighty Paul Bunyan has been stolen. Can you find it?

  • Prescenario
IMPORTANT: Pre-scenario Information and Instructions 1.) This is not a typical HOMM III map. There is nothing to conquer, nothing to develop, little to grab, and little to buy. Rather, you must find clues to a mystery. Look everywhere: hidden events, signs, timed events, quest descriptions, even hero's biographies. 2.) The two layers of this map should not be considered surface and subterranean. Rather the top layer is the exploration map -- the place where you find clues to identify the thief and locate where he/she hid the loot. The lower layer is the accusation map -- a somewhat symbolic representation of what occurs after you have resolved the mystery and are ready to accuse the culprit. 3.) Once you think you have identified the thief, make an accusation before the police inspector by opening the appropriate Pandora's box on the lower level. But beware: false accusations will face an avenging angel. Do not feel you need absolutely convincing evidence -- that will come when you find the axe. But do not leave your home area without the inspector or his subordinate -- they are necessary later. 4.) With the inspector among your troops, board the appropriate ferry to go to the axe's hidden location. This map has ferries to the Windward Steppes, the Stonewood Estates, and the Municipal Gardens. Do not board the wrong ship, or you will find no axe and lose credibility (and the game). 5.) Upon finding the axe, proceed through the one way portal to the Courthouse, present your evidence (the axe) and win the scenario. 6.) Just outside each player's main city is a repeating event which briefly describes the main players. Visit it as necessary. 7.) The keymaster's tent just outside your main city is vital to open key areas on the upper surface -- visit it first. 8.) In this scenario, there is the potential for matchups that result in unending combat sequences (e.g. a slower tougher dwarf can never catch a nimble imp). Should this occur, it is incumbent on the attacker to retreat. More generally, the attacker must retreat unless he can force progress (e.g. in the above example, a defending imp need not waste a lightning bolt to end the combat). Basically, in this world, overt hostilities are frowned upon; you will not get away with it if your opponent survives to tell the tale. 9.) This map is really intended for multi-person play. As the artificial intelligence is unable to interpret written clues and respond accordingly, expect any computer opponents to be mere spoilers. 10.) This map is designed for NORMAL to EXPERT player difficulty. In particular, impossible difficulty will unbalance the positions.
  • Background
BACKGROUND If it be true that legends leave deep footprints, then surely this is a land of legends, where the waters of Crystal Creek cut muddy swaths enroute to Wide River, and four factions cross trails in the muck. The first to arrive on these shores, he who in many ways shaped the land and the legend, was none other than the lumberjack, Paul Bunyan. Wearing his characteristic tan homespun, riding his giant ox, and wielding what some call a magic axe, he tamed the land building sawmills and slurries in the name of the Association of Independent Wood Cutters. But Eden never lasts, for with development comes industry, and with industry comes labor, and with labor, expectations. And the workers arose, finding in the collective a power they never had alone: demanding fair wages, safe saws, sure jobs. Thus was born the International woodworkers collective, its unlikely leader the humble puppet carver and later golem maker, Geppetto. Also with industry comes the need to ship goods: rafts, barges, boats and their operators call the river home. Loose floating logs are a hazard, and the Riverman's Guild won't have them. Under dynamic leadership of Captain Jack, compromise is not a consideration -- beware the teal banner. The most recent arrival -- straight from California (or maybe Venus) is the Good-Earth Guild, headed by Hexaphina Treehugger. Equally dedicated to saving trees, earthworms, and universes, these gurus of new age wisdom resolve to restore to the world a perfection it never had, wearing green as symbol of their cause. Now the scene is set; mud and feet are amply present. Bring on the legends.
  • Bunyan: Start
PAUL BUNYON 6:22 AM: The sun has arisen, though last night it seemed it may not. And you, as always have arisen with it, though your eyes blear and a boulder weights your stomach. It is gone, stolen. The axe that started your career; The magic axe that created your legend. And you want it back.
  • Bunyan: Initial plan
8:05 AM: You file the obligatory report with the police inspector, but you realize that waiting for the police to solve a crime is kind of like waiting for logs to saw themselves. No, you'll have to take matters into your own hands -- and quickly. It is very unlikely you'll ever find the axe if you don't find it in the next month. Besides, your mills will start to run out of timbers by then. 8:15 AM: The question is where to start. You ponder for a minute. The axe was stolen from the storage tower next to the stable on the shores of Thinreed Lake. It would likely hold clues. You might also wander around your mills, asking whether anyone saw anything. Or you could try to gather information about your three rivals by visiting their home areas.
  • Hexaphina: Start
HEXAPHINA TREEHUGGER 10:22 AM: The news has broken: Bunyan's axe has been stolen. And at first you think that's, like, maximally awesome, like a trillion billion trees will be saved. But that reasoning's shallow simplificationist -- I mean, what if the thief uses it to chop on kittens or something. Besides, theft is, like, you know, totally hood. So you decide it's, like, your sacred dutification to find the axe and reform the perpetor.
  • Hexaphina: Initial plan
12:24 PM: No further news. And when spirits are mute, its like sightless blindness, you know. But maybe the folk at the lookout tower have seen something. Or maybe you could, like, walk over and visit the mills for yourself. All those screaming tree sprites are like spiritual static, but, like maybe ear muffs would help. Or maybe you could go to the river bank and listen to washed up shells. Dead snails are awesomely wise -- when you understand their language, that is. 12:33 PM: You suddenly realize that the feast of Saint Lucinda is only four weeks away. It's, like, the year's most significant celebration of new-making. Failure to find the axe by that time is, you know, like a symbolic sign that the axe is not meant to be found.
  • Geppetto: Start
POPS GEPPETTO 8:55 AM: Something big is going down, and you're out of the loop. That is not acceptable. Word on the street is that Bunyan's's axe has been stolen. But gab is not always fact; you best check into this yourself. 8:57 AM: Some might ask what your interest is in finding Bunyan's axe. Fools! It's opportunity. Good business. Knowledge is power.
  • Geppetto: Initial plan
9:02 AM: So where to begin? There's a time for bravado, a time for bashing heads, and a time for subtle squeezing. The trick is to figure their angle, then to figure yours. What to do with info depends upon the info, so begin by finding info.
  • Jack: Start
CAPTAIN JACK 10:42 AM: Ugh! Look at this river. Seems to get worse every day. Last fall already, a log jam completely stopped all river traffic for nearly a week. Ought to be worse this fall. Those stupid loggers. Why can't they use barges for their product like everyone else? Ought to be a law. And that Bunyan character is the worst culprit. Some folk hero! Just 'cause he's got that high speed, modern axe, he seems to think it his divine right to convert anything with leaves into driftwood. Well, he ain't gonna get away with it. You'll see to that. 2:15 PM: Success! You just closed negotiations with a noted international trading house. It seems a set of angel wings has become available. For a price. A huge price. 1000 gems. But with those wings, you ought to be able awe Bunyan into submission -- or at least seize his headquarters. While you're at it, you may as well overthrow that pesky International Woodworkers Collective -- they're more of the same, just less competent. In fact, you probably ought to put an end to the Good-Earth Guild too, before they declare it to be a desecration to dip one's whatever into nature's sacred waters. 2:18 PM: You order it done. You liquefy foreign assets; drain your local reserves; pool your petty cash, and begin buying gems. The bulk of the shipment should arrive in about three weeks. When it arrives, you can complete the transaction by visiting the agent set up in a hut behind your headquarters. Until then, you'll just have to keep your rivals off guard; keep them from shutting you down with a political coup.
  • Jack: Axe news
2:25 PM: News -- that fool Bunyan lost his axe. Stolen last night. Hey, hey. That should throw him a curve. Might even keep him occupied for, oh, say, three or four weeks.
  • General hints: Motive
8:12 AM: It's time for some system. What do you know? Who would benefit? Who has motive? Without Bunyan's axe, the activity of the Association of Independent Loggers will come to a virtual standstill, and the non-union mills would close. Better believe that Pops would like that. But it also gives the Good-Earth Guild time to pressure the government for regulations. And it would lessen the log jam on the river, to the joy of that Guild. Well, maybe motive doesn't help. Or does it?
  • Bunyan: spy
2:21 PM: A message comes in from your agent in the International Woodworkers Collective: Info about stolen axe. Must speak in person. Meet me tomorrow by sanctuary near mouth of Crystal Creek in the west. I'll watch for you.
  • Hexaphina: Readings
4:15 PM: This is like so enigmatically mysterious. You're, like, clueless. Time for a reading. But tea leaves are, you know, an environmentally intrusive waste. A seance is so last decade -- besides which, you might get your mother. Tarot might work, but the cards, like, toast your manicure. And Ouija is out of the question: some folk claim it's Satanic, and one ought never disrespect other religions -- even the nutso ones.
  • Geppetto: Resources
8:15 AM: This looks like a case of secrecy and double dealing. Curse that truth spell placed on your son -- he's out on this one. So what are your resources? 1. There's that old grouch (seer) up north. Nasty temper, but a wisdom you can use. 2. There are spies from the ranks of Jack's guild: the lighthouse keeper for instance, or weaponmaster Horatio Glim. 3. There are the loose tongues of the unaffiliated loggers. 4. With the hassle of crossing the river, you've got the bureaucratic paper pushers. Folks who can keep you appraised of Bunyan's machinations. And Senator Stormblower owes you a favor or two. If nothing else, he's got a good accountant. 5. And then, you can always, like, you know, totally flake out, and visit Hexaphina for an aura reading.
  • Jack: Goals & methods
1:14 PM: Clues, schmues. It's not the Jack way. Why should you care about Bunyan's axe? You can't use it! Maybe saps like Hexaphina and Geppetto can be suckered into searching, but you kind of like the thing lost. Hey, hey! Kind of fits your master plan. All the tension, the innuendos, the instability. It all suits you fine. And while they're all busy distrusting each other, your shipment gets closer, gets closer. 1:33 PM: Keep the chaos. Seems like the right theme. In fact, maybe you can plant some false clues: for the sake of accusations. 2:47 PM: You've reconsidered. Perhaps you should search. Maintain appearances, you know. And cover up the real evidence.
  • General hints: Opportunity
7:57 AM: A new day, and you contemplate opportunity. Who has no alibi? You reason that any guild could fabricate testimony exonerating their chief. And even if the chief was clearly uninvolved, what of the rank and file? Surely every guild has at least one member with no alibi on a given night. No, to use opportunity, you'll have to place someone at the scene of the crime -- but even that does not prove guilt.
  • Bunyan: Lieutenants
4:46 PM: You receive a visit from the police inspector, You know, in most cases like this, we never do find anything. The culprits can't sell the item, clues are hard to come by, and, frankly, higher priorities consume most of our investigative efforts. In fact, I, myself, have been ordered to undertake special training in techniques of fingerprint restoration. I leave tomorrow to work with the sage. My lieutenants will take over the case. If anything turns up, they will know how to reach me. Work with them on this issue as you would with me.
  • Hexaphina: Kruldos warning
9:13 AM: Totally rad! It's, like, never worked before. I mean, here you were, practicing with your crystal ball, and you actually see an illusionary vision. What you saw was a hand forming from the waters of the wide river and reaching out to strangle Good-Earth Guild member Kruldos. You better warn him.
  • Jack: Strategy
12:30: All this subtle maneuvering; you'd rather bash heads. Now that's an idea! The fewer folk looking, the longer the axe will stay hidden, right? So why not bash some of the lookers? But wait. It's always better to bash than to be bashed. Maybe you ought to scout out rival heroes. Learn their abilities to optimize your match ups, I mean, you are outnumbered, three guilds to one. 12:55 PM: To understand a river, visit the river. If you want to know your enemies, scout their homes. 1:14 PM: Go ahead and scout, but remember, the world revolves around a good harbor. No one goes anywhere without visiting it.
  • General hints: Means
3:42 AM: During a restless night you consider means. How could a given person gain access to the axe to steal it in the first place? Not just anyone could find the axe. Knowing where it was kept, who could even get there. Did they do it by spell? stealth? force? Did they leave any clues?
  • Bunyan: Docks
7:42 AM: This morning it occurs to you that whoever took your axe had to take it somewhere, and in these parts, only the docks go anywhere. It bears investigation. 7:58 AM: Then again, the docks are pretty solidly under Jack's control. Do you trust him?
  • Hexaphina: Additional info
7:03 PM: It's like unbelievably inconceivable. They say the axe just poofed out of Bunyan's locked and fortified storage barn. And the guard who saw it vanish didn't see a thing.
  • Geppetto: Prisoner
9:14 AM: That Bunyan always was a fool. Axe or no, you'll have to watch him more closely. The idiot is keeping Ludmilla, champion of the common worker, imprisoned in the Northwest. What looks like Good-Earth Guild and sounds like Good-Earth Guild isn't necessarily a member. You would make better use of a willing and capable servant -- in fact, maybe you'll pay the facility a visit. In fact, it is said that Ludmilla is widely traveled, was once a barbarian shaman. If anyone knows where to find trees to keep your mills running, it would probably be her.
  • Hexaphina: Ferry warning
6:11 AM: Last night you were, you know, totally dreaming. You were, like, going to ride the ferry but you look up and see Captain Jack at the helm, and you, like, totally distrust him, so you wait for the next ferry, but see Jack in the captain's cabin. So you decide to try a different pier. You turn around to head back, and find you're, like, walking towards Jack's ferry, so you turn around again, and this time you are on Jack's ferry. But then you wake up totally freaked because it was eerily weird, but felt true. You resolve to be careful around ferries.
  • General: wharf warning
8:00 AM: Reports of bands of thugs wandering the wharf area harassing non-rivermen have been confirmed. They may be based out of Jack's Post and Trade located between piers 1 and 2.
  • Bunyan: Pirates
12:55 PM: You could just kick yourself. You don't have to trust Jack; there are still nonunion shippers. They've been driven off the docks, but rumor has it that they thrive on the free shores both east and west of Jack's Harbor. A particularly thriving colony can be found on the southern edge of the eastern peninsula.
  • Geppetto: Snoops
3:55 PM: Sources indicate that sympathizers of the Good-Earth Guild have been snooping around your territory. So, Hexaphina has an interest in Paul's axe as well. Fascinating. Or is she simply after that saboteur you've imprisoned? Well, Hexaphina might just find Lunetria to be less than the goody-two-shoes she's expecting. Might create some interesting schisms in the guild, ha, ha!
  • Jack: Bribe
11:53 AM: Oh, Jack, you're too clever by half! A bit of moola greasing the palms North Shore Ferry & Tug officials, and your major opponents sail off into La-la land.
  • Hexaphina: Omens
5:13 AM: Oh the auspices and oddities. A partial moon chases Orion while a cloud veils the face of Venus. But what does it mean?
  • Geppetto: Wall Street
9:14 AM: Apparently news of the missing axe has reached the stock market. Sawmills are off 2 and 3/4's of a point, while wood futures are up 1 and 1/2. For you, that's a double whammy -- through the guild, you run mills, but for craftsmanship you use wood.
  • Jack: Cash flow problem
12:18 PM: You do seem to have a cash flow problem at the moment. Come Monday, you'll transfer some assets to current accounts. Until then you'll have to make do.
  • General: Jack
4:42 PM: In the course of a day, you hear many tidbits from the rank and file of your organization. Most you discard as irrelevant. Today, one was interesting. Captain Jack tends to cackle at his clever ideas. He doesn't cackle very often. But last night, he was hooting up a storm in the company of officials of North Shore Ferry & Tug.
  • Bunyan: Breakfast
7:06 AM: Cook ran out of bacon -- again! Tried to feed you that granola stuff. Ruined your day before it started.
  • General: Bunyan
11:31 PM You visit the local inn to check for messages. The inn keeper is a talkative fellow who made an interesting observation about Paul Bunyan's tendencies, Paul Bunyan likes to tempt fate in order to dishonor his enemies. It's said that he once cut down an oak in Hexaphina's front yard. You note it for future reference.
  • Bunyan: Half warning
2:21 AM: You experience a strange dream; at least you think it's a dream. Two avenging angels are arguing -- in your living room. And I say half a truth is not a falsehood. But the absence of falsehood is not truth. Ah! But what are we punishing? Falsehoods or non truths? Should we reward less than the truth? Truth rewards itself, we punish falsehood. So you guarantee that no half-truth will be rewarded? In this case. Very well. I consent to do it your way -- in this case.
  • Geppetto: Wall Street II
9:15 AM: Apparently the stock market has stabilized.
  • Jack: Money again
10:43 AM: Your servants awaken you bright and early to transfer funds. I guess they want to get payed.
  • Jack: acquisition
1:33 PM: Despite your efforts, it is possible that an opponent will still figure the axe problem. If that's the case, maybe they can still be silenced. And if you should happen to intercept the axe in the process, well, that may work to your advantage, too. But beware of the inspector!
  • Hexaphina: Location hint
12:12 PM: There are a lot of people, like, searching high and low in the logging camps for clues to this axe, so whoever first took it surely put it somewhere else. And despite Captain Jack's dangerously threatening demeanor, the wharf is a likely place to gather information about the comings and goings of suspicious suspects.
  • Geppetto: Allegiance
9:12 AM: In a situation like this, it's tough to know your enemies. The fanatics of the Good-Earth Guild would destroy the jobs of every American worker, but they still respect and fight to uphold the dignity of others. Bunyan is, of course, the icon of the lumber industry, but he doesn't care a wit for the common man. And Jack -- Jack at least knows the value of organization, but his complaints about floating logs are little more than a ploy to force lumbermen to pay to ship them on his barges. It's hard to trust a dishonest man.
  • General: Philosophy
11:55 PM: You enter a new age bar and yoga gym. It appears to be filled with granola types arguing philosophy. What is reality anyway? Why should one person's truth apply to another? How do I even know we live in the same universe? You say A; I say B. Maybe we're both right in our own worlds -- at least that's my opinion.
  • General: Geppetto
10:10 AM: You run into an old friend, Mistavar the wise. You haven't seen him since he left for wizard training. But it turns out he's heard a lot about Geppetto. Apparently Geppetto, after his recognized success with living wooden puppets, was hired by the wizards to work on golems. It is said he showed little promise working in stone, and was transferred to the production of war machines. He was fired after discovering an improved ballista design when he was supposed to be working on ammo carts.
  • Hexaphina: Unemployed logger
8:57 PM: Awful day! You met, like, this unemployed, out-of-work logger, you know, and he was complaining about having nothing to do, so you suggested he grow organic cabbage or something. But he says, like, there ain't no market, and you tell him that if everyone treated the Earth like it were a temple, and their bodies as shrines, then there would be a market. And he just totally stares at you, as if you were platinum or something, and that just about bugged you out. But later you realize you oughtn't feel that way about a created soul; it's like wicked bad karma. So you'll bake him a loaf of bread and maybe tomorrow you'll both be wiser.
  • Geppetto: Rumors I
9:18 AM: A rumor is circulating that Jack has a smuggling base in the Windward Steppes. He visits there often, usually under secrecy. 9:24 AM: A second rumor has surfaced. Hexaphina is wearing an iron collar said to have been smelted by dwarves from magical metal. 9:27 AM: Would you believe a third rumor? This one says that Bunyan has purchased 7 sawmills across the Wide River.
  • Jack: fleet
1:14 PM: Over-logging may play havoc with navigation, but it sure can lower lumber prices. You take advantage of the situation to expand your fleet.
  • Bunyan: Timbers needed
1:22 PM: You receive an urgent telegram from Crystal Creek Mill #23. Out of timbers. Please advise. While hardly a surprise, you realize that you really need your axe soon: as anyone could observe, you need a steady wood supply to keep your mills functioning. And you better allow yourself enough time to get to the courthouse to arrange new lumber rights.
  • Geppetto: Rumors II
9:11 AM: You are still trying to sort through yesterday's rumors when you hear still another: that the Good-Earth Guild is being taken over by the much more radical Whole Earth Liberation League. Should the rumor prove true, you should prepare for much more militant activists from that sector. 9:16 AM: When it comes to rumors, it is hard to tell truth from falsehood, but financial records leave traces. Could Paul afford those mills? Does Jack have unaccounted for income? To whom do the Good-Earth Guild accounts belong? Perhaps you should pay a visit to Senator Stormblower's accountant in the south east.
  • Bunyan: Rally
11:12 AM: The Good-Earth Guild has scheduled a rally near East Creek Canyon to demand an environmental impact statement before logging operations commence. It's a good thing you clearcut the region last month.
  • Geppetto: Wood shortage
8:55 AM: You estimate about a week's supply of unprocessed logs for your mills. Unless new forests are opened soon, your people will be out of work. You order a slowdown at the mills, and a transfer of sawyers to your furniture factories.
  • Jack: Salvage
The seas can be a dangerous place. Especially for rival shipping lines. But you're rather enjoying your salvage operations.
  • Bunyan: Law suit
9:42 AM: You have been summoned to appear in court three weeks from today. One of Jack's stooges claims the logs you float down the river capsized his boat. As though he could tell it was your log. And logs don't steer. If he ran into it, you ought to sue him!
  • Hexaphina: Show
7:13 AM: You hope to resolve this axe business in the next few days. See, next week this totally awesome visual artist is opening a show, The Abstract Sun, at this really hip gallery in downtown Portville, but it would be, like, capriciously irresponsible to attend with unfinished, unresolved business still pending.
  • Geppetto: Golems
9:12 AM: You are very pleased with the durability of your golems. One of these days -- when your people need you less -- you will go back to your workshop to finish your project of many years ago, perfecting wooden golems. They will never be as durable, but they would be a bundle cheaper.
  • Hexaphina: Unicorns
10:45 PM: You've been thinking about unicorns a lot lately. Wouldn't it be, like, totally cosmic if they were real?
  • Jack: Publicity
4:15 PM: This axe business is generating more publicity than you might have thought. There are even calls for a special, federal investigation. Ugh! Such scrutiny might not be good for business. And at the rate things are going, you predict intervention by the end of the month, and at this point, the clamor can probably be quelled only by retrieval of the axe or by the disintegration of certain guilds. The latter sounds much more appealing.
  • General: Hole
8:13 PM As you ponder where one could have hidden an axe, it occurs to you that if the axe were buried, there would be signs of recent digging. But were it just left somewhere, it could be accidently found; and were it in someone's posession, it would be highly incriminating. You figure it might be wise to look for a hole -- unless you can think of some other place a thief would put an axe.
  • Bunyan: Conditioning
8:00 AM: It's been nearly three weeks since your axe disappeared, and it remains unlocated. Already your heart is getting lazy and your arms flabby. You better find it soon, or you'll be totally out of shape.
  • Geppetto: Time limit
9:23 AM: The Stuart Valley Mill #11 voted against unionization! This axe nonsense is consuming too much of your valuable time. You give yourself until the end of next week. After that, you will have to turn your attention to other matters.
  • Jack: Conquest
12:23 PM: Now's the time. Take wing before your opponents can react. If you seize the headquarters of your foes, their minions may desert. Or maybe you could take the courthouse. Lord Jack does have a nice ring to it.
  • Hexaphina: Hurry warning
9:02 AM: There's, you know, this rock? And you almost trip over it. And that reminds you of the upcoming Feast of Saint Lucinda, because there's, like, no similarity. But anyway, you realize you are running out of time on retrieving Paul's axe. You, like, ought to at least be on a ferry headed toward it by now, because, in case it's, like, hiddenly concealed, you might not, you know, get it to the courthouse in time.
  • Hexaphina: New week
6:45 AM: Things are, like, totally happening! It's the dawn of a new week beginning. If there were any trees, they'd be, like, standing in total anticipation. And you have, like, this feeling, and you want to sing, and shout, and you totally don't know why, but that's lifeful living, and this is the day.
  • Geppetto: Rumors III
8:49 AM: A rumor says that you were assassinated early this morning. It appears to be false. 9:12 AM: Another rumor says Bunyan has given up leadership of the Association of Independent Wood Cutters to become ambassador to Argentina. 9:15 AM: It is reported that a shipyard in England is producing stone boats which are far more durable than wooden ships. This development will supposedly destroy the influence of the Riverman's Guild and bring financial ruin to the lumber industry. 9:18 AM: Chickens have been placed on the endangered species list. It is now a felony offense to eat eggs. 9:21 AM: An earthquake measuring 11.9 on the Richter scale has caused the Wide River to fall into the Pacific Ocean. 9:23 AM: The earthquake was really only 11.7 on the Richter scale. 9:31 AM: Hexaphina is allegedly mounting a massive misinformation campaign -- and trying to pin the blame for it on Jack. 9:37 AM: The International Woodworkers Collective has gone on strike, demanding softer wood. 9:38 AM: You instruct your staff that you want to hear no more rumors today.
  • Bunyan: Out of timber
4:55 PM: Raw materials for your mills are running critically low. Just to keep them running, you have to dip into your reserves. And you'll have to dip deeper every day until you can resume logging operations!
  • Bunyan: Wood
    Wood to run mills.
  • Jack: allegations
Bunyan appears poised to point his finger -- at you. You best deal with him quickly!
  • Geppetto: End coming
9:22 AM: Well, this axe fiasco has about cost you enough time; Bunyan's loss is your gain anyway. Perhaps you'll allow yourself one last stab at it; the mystery is intriguing, but come the end of this week, that's it.
  • Jack: Subpoena
10:13 AM: Things have indeed become interesting. Mills are closing left and right for lack of wood, and Bunyan is ranting. In response to the closings, Geppetto has called for a woodworker strike. Hexaphina has accused the rain of losing its pH. And you've all been subpoenaed for the federal investigation. You'll enjoy watching the outcome -- from Mexico.
  • Bunyan: Endangered Species
11:15 AM: You have just heard the news: the EPA has declared the Black-winged Gopher Fly an endangered species. When will they realize their stupid regulations are making the American Lumberjack an endangered species? Maybe you just don't care any more whether they find your axe or not. • Hexaphina: Feast of Saint Lucinda
12:01 AM: Oh, glorious wonderment! What a totally awesome day! And it's, like, only initially beginning! But the stars are dancing in renewed newness, and the Earth is overturned, and the air is alive! Poor Bunyan. Perhaps his axe will yet be returned, but the time is nigh; the cycles are turning; there's joy in the heavens!

No one has seen him since the night of the crime. You also examine the storage area. Axes are scattered in disarray. It appears that who ever broke in started near the door, chopping their way into lockers, strewing the contents onto the floor. They stopped one locker past your own. Despite the mess, the facilities manager notices nothing else missing, just the pile of apparently rejected axes. He tells you he can find no evidence of forced entry, nor any other sign left by the perpetrator. Maybe if he had a good magnifying lens to examine the area more closely, he might find something. You realize that he could take apart a viewing glass. Maybe one can be found over in the exotic market along the wharf. You tell him you'll check back to see if he's found anything else.

After fantastic success with one of his creations, Pops was hired by the wizards to craft wooden golems. Unfortunately, with the advent of stone golems, Pops was unceremoniously retired a few years later. Now an avid spokesman for worker's rights, his family includes the International Woodworkers Collective.

And the stories are all true and unexaggerated -- including the one of how he felled 50 trees in a single blow. What they don't tell, however; is that such actions were less the prowess of Bunyan than the power of his magic axe. Still, he receives credit for seeing its use in logging rather than war. Recently, Bunyan has directed this entrepreneurial spirit to the formation of the anti-union, pro-industry Association of Independent Wood Cutters.

    • Биография: Syrina once expected to spend her life sailing the oceans on stolen ships. But she once pursued a prize vessel too far up the river and discovered to her chagrin that the currents and rapids of a river easily matched the challenge of storms and reefs at sea. Thus she came to respect the river and stayed for a while. Later, discovering the rivermen were so naive she decided to extend that stay. Hardly an ally -- or even friend -- of the Rivermen's Guild, she does find common cause in the struggle against big lumber companies and their practice of clogging the river with debris.
